I was wondering if it is good for the mother to have all her puppies leave at once or should it be spread out over a few days? I feel bad for the mother once the puppies leave and it seems like this time everyone wants to come on the exact same day. Is this a good idea or should I have them spread out over a few days?
My moms all can't wait to have pups gone, I have had a mom that keep looking for her babies for a couple days, so it is nice if they can all go around the same time. I usually don't really have the pups around their mom after they are on food, just because then the moms milk dries up. Because that can hurt her when she is so full.
My breeding mentor weans the pups at 5 wks, depending on health of mom and pups. Sometimes later, sometimes sooner. After that, the pups are on their own, not a whole lot of contact with mom after that. They stay in their own puppy run. This way she can monitor how they are doing before they leave for good. As far as I know, the moms have never had any issues with this.
I wean my puppies at about 5-6 wks so they are well used to being without mom and I can make sure they are eating plenty of solid foods before they leave at 8 wks. They have always done very well this way. Mom usually seems more than happy to "get on with her life" at that point.
