My Shih Tzu "Howie" is now 5 months old. Potty training has been slow but as of a couple of weeks ago has has begun to scratch at the door to go out. he is great...he can roll-over, sit, stay, etc.... we love him. The issue we are having now has to do with his temperament when he is tired. When he is tired or trying to sleep and either of my two youngest kids(and sometimes mom) try to pick him up-for whatever reason- he growls and has at times (though rare) nipped. I do not want a dog I have to worry about around children. Is this behavior normal? Is there anything we can do to stop this? I understand everyone gets cranky when tired but not knowing if your dog will bite someone is unaccaptable. Any advice is appreciated.
Make sure you say his name before you bother him when he is sleeping. You need to teach your children to never bother a sleeping dog, theirs, a friends, any dog.
Think of it this way - if you were sound asleep, and someone came and picked you up, what would your first instinct be? You'd probably hit them or yell right? Same goes for the dog. By saying his name, you are letting him know you are coming and he can have time to process waking up.
