I just got a new kitten on Friday last week. We have two cats in the house already that are 2 years old. The kitten is not using the litterbox, (poop for sure, have not found any urine; she is going behind the couch and using that as her "litterbox". I got some spray and cleaned it up with disinfectant spray and put her in another room with the door closed and the litterbox. All day she did not use the litterbox. The co-worker I got her from had her in their house and she used it there. Why is she not using it in my house.
How old is the kitten? Perhaps it is the type of litter? I am assuming you let her have full reign of your home as you mentioned living room. Isolate her into one room only with the box for several days. Place her in the box and let her find her way out of it. Spend your time with her in the room. When she uses it, praise her. On supervised visits, let her out of the room and see if she can find her way back. If she starts going frantic looking for it, then lure her back into the room. Kittens can only handle small areas at a time. I would say by 8/10 weeks old they should be able to handle two to three rooms. I hope this helps you.
Ditto what Stiches and Wiley said. Also, do you have enough litter pans? Make sure you have a litter pan available where the kitten won't feel trapped-for example, he goes in to pee and when he comes out, the others are scaring him or chasing him? If you have a covered pan, he may prefer an uncovered pan or vice versa. Most cats prefer unscented litter and no litter pan liners. Also, if you haven't already, have him vet checked, just to be sure there's no medical problems. But my guess would be he either doesn't like the litter, or doesn't like WHERE the litter pan is located.
I will seclude her to her own area as soon as i get home from work tonight. I don't remember having this problem with my other cats, they seemed to catch right on. Showed them the litterbox once and it was the end of it, Thanks for the advice.
