My 5 month old Weimeraner mix is teething. He has lost at least 4 teeth today and yesterday and they are just the ones I have come across! The thing is his gums keep bleeding and he just keeps chewing his rawhide toys. I have given him a frozen wash cloth but he keeps going back to the hard toys even though his gums keep on bleeding. Is this normal and is there anything I can do to relieve what must be painful? This is my first dog and I am clueless!
Take the rawhide away, that will stop the bleeding. And its normal for him to be bleeding, hes probably caused them to come out with his chewing, just like human baby teeth they bleed. Do you have a Kong? Fill that with peanut butter, spray with water(on the outside) and stick it in the freezer for a couple hours. Your dog will love the peanut butter and the cold rubber will feel good on his gums. You can also try frozen baby teething rings, just becareful that they don't bust open, I'm not sure if its just water in them.
Agreed about the rawhide...not neccesarily the best choice. I would also add to be sure to have a wide variety of dog toys (and lots of them!) with all different textures for your dog to chew on. I might suggest that children's teethers probably wont stand up to the teething of a dog your size.
