Does anyone know how safe it is for small dogs to be put under while getting spayed? I plan on having Ace spayed when he's around 6 months old, but Im worried since he'll be so small (7 or 8lbs). Is the procedure safe for dogs that're so tiny? Plus, he's a chihuahua, and I believe I remember Minniyar saying chihuahua's could have a reaction to the anestesia (sp)? Sorry, if it wasn't you Minniyar who said that!
I said that they can indeed have reactions to anesthesia. The size is an issue but really, many cats will weigh less than your dog does and go through spay/neuter safely. It's the most commonly performed surgical procedure. Make sure your vet does preanesthetic testing, and specifically request that your vet use 'isoflourane', which is a milder anesthesia that is recommended for breeds known to have issues with anesthesia, including chihuahuas.
They can. My cat did. But have the vet check the heart condition. That's a good way to be sure that things go smooth. Frosty was neutered around six or seven pounds, and it's routine. Just be sure to go to the vet you are comfortable with, be sure that the dog is in good health (ne fleas, etc.).
