Last night, out of the blue, Mac started snorting (he sounded like a pig). It was like he couldn't get enough air. It lasted for maybe 10 seconds straight and then after that it was one snort here and there. Does anyone know what would cause that or does it sound like symptoms of some kind?

I'm thinking reverse hiccups. Mollie does it sometimes, its scary huh? If I catch her doing it, I usually rub her throat gently or since shes a bigger dog I "pat" her on the sides of her ribs and it forces the air thats trapped out.
no it is not harmful. it is more common in the brachycephalic breeds. i know it is common among french bulldogs, as many of the members of my frenchie forum have seen this in their dogs. no one has lost any of their dogs to any bouts of reverse sneezing.
If you are a dog and your owner suggests that you wear a sweater, suggest that he wear a tail.
My beagle does that too every once in a while. It scared me at first too but she never seemed sick or anything. I remembered that that was what my lab would do in her older stages when she had these weird nose bleeds so she would always be sneezing it out.. I guess that makes sense then, reverse sneezing.
