My baby aussie is 4 mo. and was not crate trained or pottytrained. She pottytrained in less than a week but is not doing well with her crate. She SCREAMS when she is in there. If we are in the room she is ok but if we leave she yelps/barks/whines/ and screams for hours!! She is never in there more than 3 hours but she HATES it. She has learned if she goes in she will get a treat so she will go in but as soon as I close the gate she will not stop crying! Any advice?
Don't close the door at all until she is comfy to go in and out. Do this exercise over and over. Give her treats and let her feel free to come in and out. Give her another treat and let her know that the crate is not going to lock her up.
Feed and water her in the crate only. After she thinks the crate is her den you can remove the food and water. Leave the door open at the first few feedings. If you get by with closing it great if not back up a step and leave it open.
Keep her only bed in there, put a t-shirt of yours so it smells like mommy.
Add toys to her crate, play soft music I also found helped them to sleep at night.
Hey good luck, using a crate is the best tool they make! IMO
I have also heard of some people covering the crate to help with the anxiety.
