I'm switching my dogs to Canidae. They only have 5lb, 20lb, and 40lb bags of the dry formula. I live 4hrs from the pet store also. So what would be the best bag to buy? I'm thinking the 20lb. When I called the pet store she told me it was best to buy the 5lb but it would only last me 2weeks probably.
If I get the 20lb, will I have to freeze or refridgurate the food? Or if just stored in a air tight container good enough?

I know what you are talking about living 4 hours away from the pet food store. LOL That use to be me a few years ago. I was buying it on line for a while. I asked my vet to carry Canidae and she does now.
First I would buy the small bag to see if everyone gets along with it well.
Then if everything is great I would buy the 40lb bag and definitely freeze the rest. Why pay shipping?
I've always bought 50lb bags of all natural dog food and never had a problem with it going bad. The bags are lined with materials that keep it fresh. As long as you close it tight.. I don't see the issue.

I live 2 1/2 hours away from a store that I can buy good dog food, I always order on-line, unless we are out of town and can stock up. I always order the 50 lb. bags. The formula I use for the little guys I just seal it up good and it last them a couple of months or more. I don't freeze it. My big guys go through theirs faster.
Well I only have shih tzus. The lady when I called said her two shih tzu's go through the 5lb bag every 2-3weeks. So a 20lb would last 8-9weeks... could the food go bad within this time period if kept frozen.
Though, I'm sure my dogs might eat more then hers since they are growing puppies. Before they'd go through a 8kg bag of Iams in a month.
