There are two coat types that produce a lesser amount of allergens: single-coated dogs, who do not have a thick undercoat, and hairless dogs. However even hairless dogs can produce enough dander to to affect a highly allergic person.

All mammals have some sort of fur or hair. Hair sheds. Hair does not grow forever, it stops growing and then detatches from the follicle and drops off the animal or tangles up in the animal's coat.
Believe me or not, human beings shed hair. Haven't you ever looked at your hairbrush? Poodles shed hair. It's just that their hair texture is more like a human hair than some other dogs. Many terriers have similar hair as well as the breeds the other poster listed.
Any animal that has skin has "dander." Dander is just dead skin cells that flake off the surface of the skin. When new skin cells grow they push the older ones to the skin surface where they die and flake off.
You have dander, dogs have dander, cats have dander, horses have dander...
Even stuffed animals are not "hypoallergenic". Their stuffing over time becomes infested with microscopic dust mites and the poop of the dust mites.
The world is just not a clean and tidy place.
Pets smell, shed hair, shed skin, poop and vomit occasionally in inappropriate places, roll in disgusting things, lick themselves (and other dogs) in socially unacceptable parts of their anatomy (and then want to lick you with that same tongue), get dirt on your floors/rugs and generally make a mess.
If you can't stand the mess that goes with a dog--DON'T GET A DOG!
Is your mom really allergic or does she just not like animals? A lot of people use allergies so they don't have to hurt feelings. Once I went to a house who serviced food I didn't like so I told them I was allergic. They all felt so sorry for me. If I would have told the truth (the food smelled and looked bad)they would have thought I was awfully rude.
If she really is allergic she should go to a house with the dog you are interested in and see how she feels. My nephew is allergic to labs, but he sleeps with a Chinese Crested and doesn't break out in hives.
Well me and my dad are thinking about a Yorkshire terier but im moving to Port moody B.C so we're renting a house for a year or even shorter so when we buy a huose /furniture excedera were gonna think about a yorkshire terrier but is it true they have hair not fur?? How bad is dander on a yorkshire terrier? My mom is allergic to dander and shed.
Contrary to popular belief, there IS a hypo-allergenic dog. They shed very little and their coats don't allow dander build up. I did a LOT of research because I had the same problem. Basenji's are non-allergenic. The day I got my Kayze, was the best day of my life! While the Basenji is dander free, it is a huge handfull so make sure you have the time and energy these dogs crave. They can be very difficult, but they love to please. I hope this helps!! Love, Basenji Babe
