The breeder that I got Donata from told me that they always wet all of their dogs food with warm water before serving. They said that food swells when wet which is true and that a dogs really doesn't know how much it has eaten until after it is done because the food swells in their stomach. They wet the food first and have found that the dogs tend to eat less because they get full faster and it is a "true" full. They also claims that it prevents bloat. I have been doing it now with my dogs for a week and they love it. Of course you have to supplement their diets with some bones to keep their teeth clean but it made alot of sense to me. I have also noticed that my dogs are eating less. I was feeding my dogs an all natural Lamb and Rice food and it swelled quite a bit when water was added. I have since switched to Canidae and there is very little swelling. That shows that there really isn't very much fillers in that food. Don't know if there is any truth to the whole "bloat" thing but I know that you can tell how much fillers you are feeding by how much the food swells. I figure with all of my dogs being large breed dogs that it is worth a shot if it does work.
there are a lot of things that everyone says will cause bloat. food swelling, exercising before or after a meal, eating 1 meal instead of two and so on. no one has ever found 1 definitive cause of bloat. i have seen dogs bloat cause they drank to much water, had nothing to do with food.soaking the food is one more precaution someone can take but how well it works who knows. if your dogs like their food soaked go ahead. one can't be too careful when it comes to such a serious problem.
Yeah I understand you point Scout. I still take the neccesary procautions and make sure there is no extra activity after a meal. Bloat is a very serious condition and anything I can do to prevent it is worth a try.
wow thats good to know. Can bloat happen with Boxers as well? The reason I am asking is because as most or some of you all know we recently had a boxer. He passed away the end of April. Unfortunately he wasn't very old and we are unsure what happened to him as far as how he got sick. He was really healthy and happy then one day when we got up and went out to feed him he was laying there breathing unusual and we couldn't get him to eat, drink or even stand up. I had to go to work and couldn't call in since there are only 3 of us that work there and I was already running late( I work an hour away from home). I told dh to take him to the vet and he didn't ( he said oh he will be fine even though I kept insisting he take him in), (now with star I do all the vet stuff). I know that he wasn't able to get to any chemicals or anything that would make him sick because he was chained up. That day at work I went online to see what it could be (looking for signs) and when I called dh to tell him what I had found out he said Maxx hadn't made it. Last November he had the same signs and then later that day he was fine. This was the second time this had happened in all the 7 years we had him. He never had any sort of other problems. I am so confused and still feel bad like its my fault. I am constantly watching over Star like a hawk now (not to say I didn't with Maxx but I just won't rely on dh to do the vet thing).
I have read that many times. I fully believe it and that is why I used canned for a while. *Vote for my Coconut and join my forum!* http://www.photowow.com/r/contest.asp?p=vote.asp&c=156&i=17456 http://22.214.171.124/users5/furkid/index.cgi
