Ive been posting about Daisy itching herself raw on her tail and scratching her face where she has blood on it- Now shes just scratching all the time and cant get her to stop. I thought it was when she came home from the groomers that the shampoo they used was to strong so i did give her a bath with oatmeal shampoo hoping it would stop her from going crazy with itching herself- seemed like it helped alittle but now she is constantly digging and itching - There are no fleas- she has lost all the hiar at the base of her tail and the only thing that is there is a big freakle that she has always been covered in big freakles- ( under her white hair) of coarse its red and raw from her nawing on it- I have this spray that numbs i got when Bentley had his butt raw from the anal gland infection thingie- and its a topical spray so i thought maybe this would help and numb the spot on her tail and she would leave it alone and it does help some what and she slept threw the night the past few nights ive spayed it on there. Other wise she wakes us up digging at herself. This morning shes just scrathing her ears now and chewing on her feet- OK i know its time to go the vets office which i will call first thing in the morning and hope i can get her in after work. But im now thinking about benadryl??? I know when Daisy gets her shots at the vets he gives her a dose of baby well liquid benadryl. So i wonder if this would help her stop itching? and what does should i give her? she weighs 12.5 pounds. do i do a dose like a babies weight? Nothing has changed in the home for her to be going crazy with itching and Bentley isnt itching at all. Its just her its like almost a oc disorder with her now. of coarse we tell her to stop and i will move her mouth away from her tail and try to keep her mind off it and play with her. I just feel so bad and dont know what could be causing this? and no she wasnt shaved at the groomers so it isnt short hair growing back that could be itchy BUT this did all start after her getting a hair cut and going to the groomers. But i did wash her to remove any crap they used on her . is there anything else that anyone can think of that would cause a dog to go crazy and itch them selfs all day long?No bumps no rashes i dont see anything at all that would cause her to itch herself raw./ And it isnt shes pulling her hair out on her tail she is just itching it raw and shes losing the hair- any one know of anything?? also benadryl is safe right? it has to be if the vet gave it to her but what dose can i use ? and will this stop the itching? or just make her tired sorry so long i just feel so bad for her and i want to do soemthing to help
I've used benadryl with Lacy's itching before because she's allergic to flea bites. Even one flea getting on her will make her itch. The vet told me to get the Children's Benadryl (2.5 mg per mL). The dosage is 1mg per pound for dogs. Lacy is 7lbs and gets 3mL (can have that up to 3 times per day). So for a 12.5lb dog you would give 5mL..but of course I would check with your vet just to be sure. It makes Lacy a little sleepy sometimes, and I think it helps a little but she still scratches some. I think it helps with milder allergies but I'm not so sure for more severe allergies.
If it where Wiley or Blaze I would be taking them to the vet and have them tested for food allergies. OR switch her food to something else to see it is helps. My sis had trouble with her Maltese. She was allergic to Innova, she was switched to a different food and is doing great.
Daisy has a vet appt tomororw. her itching is getting out of control and she has now scratched about all her hair off her tail and its raw looking- she isnt scratching her face anymore but her tail- poor thing and yesterday i noticed a quarter sized patch of hair missing on her side, im thinking ringworm? but dont see anything there. My daughter has gotton ringworm from something the past 5 months shes had it twice, so i know what it looks like but does it look differnt on dogs? I have no idea at all what could be causing her so much grief? checked again still no fleas. No marks or anything .No food changes, just going to the groomers and also having her rabie shot. I did give her benadryl the past few days and it seems to help her alittle and she does stop chomping on her tail for alittle bit, it seems to last about 3 hours is this normal? then shes back to digging and scratching. Is there anything life threating that can cause such a oc scratching? Will the vet do blood work? how will he know whats making her itchy when i cant? I dont think its food its been the same and just the last few days i have tried differnt thinking maybe it would help. but nothing seems to help. so well see what the vet says tomororw.
I'm glad you are finally taking her to the vet since this has been going on for a few weeks now. I hope you can figure out what's wrong. I highly doubt that it's ringworm - it's just not that common in dogs but I guess it could be a possiblity, especially in immunocompromised dogs. I really think it's some kind of allergy, especially since the benadryl helped temporarily. Benadryl only works for a short period of time for Lacy too..that's why I think it's only good for a mild allergy and not severe and it sounds like Daisy has more severe. Let us know what you find out.
