Help... I just got a litter of tiny poodle pups three of the five are just a few ozs and there eyes are just starting to open... the woman that gave them to me lost the mom a few days ago and didn't know how to hand raise ... I have hand raised puppies before but never this small. They seem to be eating well. But I'm not sure what I'm doing ....Most of the puppies I have raised have started out at close to a pound and this litter is soooo very small
OMG Roswell. WOULD LOVE to hear some of your stories!!! anytime.. I use a swimming pool with shredded up newspapers and a heater pups need constant 85 degrees the first 3 weeks cold kills feed them every 2 to 3 hours. do you have a good serigate mom/cat/dog? they do so much better with one. or you can do what i do sleep with them. the newspaper is good cause they bury themselves in plus you need to make them pee and poop or you will loose them. wet ones work well or wet tissues. GOOD LUck PS if you do loose some please do not blame yourselve it very hard to keep them going after they loose mom.
I do have a maltipoo that is taking an interest in them but she can't nurse. we have a heating pad on low under a thick towel to keep them warm and now that they are adjusting to the bottle they are eating good for the moment. i am concerned about the runt and her foot I've never seen anything like that before ... I'm going to ask the vet about it and see what he says. if she survies we may just keep her. as I don't see anyone being willing to take on a special needs pup.
Ohh don't give up on the runt, perhaps a little therapy and it will resolve itself. I have a friend online that has a small dog that could barley walk as a tiny pup, but now is doing soooo well. Good luck with these prescious babys.
Whoever said you can't buy happiness, must have never owned a dog!!!!!!!!!!!
You can also use a light bulb for heat, put it about 10-12 inches above them. I use a formula of evaporated milk, water karo syrup and egg yolk, but that is for older pups, you can also use Nutrical on newborns and this will give them a jump start as it's high in calories and vitamins-minerals and they love the taste. Use a 3 cc syringe, but at this size, no more than 1 cc per pup....
The trip to the Vey was good. He said to watch for asperation and such ... said it looked as though the turned foot was broken at birth and can be fix by rebreaking and casting again ... she may loose some range of movement but other then that she should be fine. alll of there eyes are open now and they are just soooo cute. its hard to beleave something that small can survive.
the light bulb idea is really effective. it has been commonly used on chicken chicks, they are the ones who often times suffer from too much cold since they are often left on their own and not being kept warm by their moms. it is best not to keep them in such a close distance to the pups though. pups are way more active than chicks i would recommend a foot and a half though. there are also puppy milk formulas available though. i think it would be much better than to make ur own, saving urself the trouble and at least ur sure of what your giving the pups. besides these puppy milk formulas arent called such if it wasnt meant for puppies.. i wish u luck on ur litter..
Well me being a poodle owner. Having a pup come to you with a little bit of grooming under its belt, makes for a poodle with less fears of having a buzzing thing in its face. Its not a mandatory thing, but helpful to them and new owners. Well small breeds can suffer from hypoglycemic problems. They need their sugar level not to drop. Luxating Patella usually shows up by about a year if its going to get it. Poodles are at the top of the list for having not deep enough grooves in the knee.
