My 4 yr old German Shepherd has hip dysplasia. I've been giving him Rimadyl but his right hip isn't too good. He's been limping for the last week and a half. He doesn't seem to be in pain because I am always massaging his legs and helping him excersise his legs and it doesn't seem to bother him. I have a vet appointment this week and the only sure thing would be the surgery at $3000.00/per hip and at this time I just don't have that kind of money. If anyone had this experience with their dog I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on other options.
My dog has pain in her leg from arthritis and she is on a drug called Neurontin. Rimadyl did nothing for her pain. You may need a stronger pain medication. They neurontin lasts for 50 days (mine gets 2 capsules once a day) and it is only $11.00 at Costco.
Wow really, is that a human med or dog med. I may need it sometime for my old girl. Doing the gluco-chondr. Have been for a few years now. O.P. add MSM to the mixture too. Some gluco-chondr have it added.
Whoever said you can't buy happiness, must have never owned a dog!!!!!!!!!!!
nurotin is a wicked drug- my doctor put me on it for my IC i have and that med made me confused and forgot where i was and i would stand there in a store and not even know what i was doing there. Stoped taking that stuff. Im surprised they give dogs this medication. But i guess it works for some ppl or dogs, just not me .
suggestions are going to be beneficial ONLY to help the comfort level of the dog. Sadly the only way you can really take care of this is with the surgery. Regardless of any medication or combo of medications, you will not remove the given problem of a degenerating joint. I can tell you the cost you have been quoted is right in line for that type of surgery. The problem is only going to get much much worse of you do not deal with this now. Sorry you have the problem. I would be interested in knowing if your breeder (if you went to a breeder) gave you copies of OFA (hip and elbow) certifications of mother/father and their parents? I know I certainly do with all my clients. CERF as well. Good luck to you
I just wanted to comment on the last post : even with the parents being OFA tested HD and other such conditions can still happen. Even OFA excellent dogs can throw pups with HD. However that being said health testing is a very helpful tool and the more generations it is done with the better chance at least to minimizing the disease there is. If you have not comtacted the breeder please make sure to do so . This way at least they know that this probalem is in their line though it is not that helpful to your pup.
I'm sorry you are going through this
You may want to go to a teaching university vet school for ex U or Penn. Places like that sometimes can do things a little cheaper and you may be able to get a paymeny plan.
Also alomg with the Glucosimine Chondritin, try MSM and also fish oil. Try usingh liquid Glucosmine /Chondritin it is supposed to absorb better form what I've read
you can talk to your vet about other pain meds such as deramax as well. Even though they don't make the problem go away. At least the dog will be mopre comfortable
