Do any of you have experience with puppy strangles. 1st time seeing this for me, pup is doing fine, wanted to ask about steriods and the stunting of growth/joint problems. Pup not on steroid for months, currently has been on Prednisone 7mg every 12 hours for 12 days now. He's doing so well my vet cut him back to 5mg every 12 hours. Fur is growing back, ears no longer swollen, etc... Anyone have insight or experience? thanks.
Thanks. Trying to see if there's anyone out there that actually has some knowledge from personal experience and the affect of steriod vs growoth/joint. Did the same as you suggested, went to the net and learned a lot.
Okay so i'm trying NOT to cry while writing this. My baby oscar, an 11 mo. old beuatiful boxer, has been diagnosed with cryptoccocus. He's been sick for about a month but what was thought to be just allergies and treated with an antibiotic and due to swelling of the lymphnodes in his neck he was also put on prednisone. We were told it was the strangles and it was treated as such but this past weekend it got out of control. The lymphnodes in his neck grew to the size of baseballs sunday night. Monday morning he was taken in and two syringes full of fluid was drawn from him and sent to pathology. Results came back with cryptoccus. I'm devistated. He's so much my baby i can't deal with this. All i can do is cry when I look into his helpless eyes. He is now on a high powered antibiotic which the vet said will nock it out. But everything i have read on it is terrible. Can cause blindness, nervouse disorders and respitory problems. His eyes are so swollen, for lack of a better word, they aren't all the way forward, they look like they are rolling into the back of his head. I can't stand it!! Please, is there anyone out there who has experienced or knows anyone who has experienced anything of this nature!! I need some advice!! This is my baby and I can't lose him!!!
oscar's momma, very sorry to hear about this. I had to look it up, did google search, because I am actually not familiar with it. It's a fungus, found in soil, many times bird feces contributes to the problem in the soil. It's not puppy strangles or related. I do not know treatment, diagnosis/prognosis or anything like that. I hope your pooch is ok.
One of our rescue pups had strangles from early on. He is the last of the litter. Has not had any innoculations as of yet because of his immune system. I was not his caretaker so I don't know evactly what he was given. I'd have to ask. He had some facial sores. This all started in the first weeks of his life. He is now about 12 or 13 weeks now and is up for adoption. Here he is. He acts like a happy silly puppy now. You can click on his picture to see how good he is looking,
