I've decided I'm going to try the CAnidae Chick and Rice food for Toby. I'm going to get some kibble and some wet and mix it. What do you guys think about that? He has been on my homemade chic/rice/veggie/bran mixture since the pet food scare. He's gotten pretty spoiled about eating but I am SOOOOO tired of making it every week. Also I was told that he might not be getting a balanced diet and everything he needs in my homemade stuff. So I thought I'd give this stuff a try. I heard it's good stuff.
Canidae is an excellent food. I will say that it gave Faeden horrible diarrhea when we first started to switch him over. We just gave him a spoonful of pumpkin with his food every night, and that seemed to take care of the problem. But his coat has never been shinier, and he has definitely been shedding much less.

I also heard that Canidae is good food. Chloe' loved it and it was actually the only kibble she would eat dry!!! Every other food, I had to put something on it to get her to eat. We stopped feeding it to her, because she started chewing on her feet and wouldn't even play with her toys. So there was something in it, that she didn't tolerate.
Let us know how it goes...make sure to switch slowly.
Merico I have heard that the high amount of protein in Canidae might make it too difficult for some dogs to digest. I assumed that is why Faeden's stomach was soo messed up the first few days he was on it. Would that be the cause of your dogs problems as well?
I switched about a month ago to Canidae for all three of my dogs. They were on Natural Balance but the newest puppy had a heck of a time trying to eat it. Those kibble pieces are disk shaped and she would chew and chew and chew trying to break them up. Just too big for a 2 1/2 lb puppy! I started snapping them into smaller pieces but they are really really hard and I ended up with blisters on my fingers :( Needless to say they love the Canidae and I haven't had any problems at all with the transition from Natural Balance. If anything their stools are actually firmer. As for their coats. I haven't noticed any change since the big switch over. They are all Maltese mixes so they tend to have fluffier coats anyways.
WileyBlaze....The Canidae is great!..it was the Natural Balance that had the larger disk shaped kibble that Pipi had such a hard time eating. Both are an all stages/ages food, but I don't think many small breed puppies would have an easy time with the Natural Balance. Quality control is a little more lax perhaps with Natural Balance I think. Every second or third bag I would buy I noticed had almost a "burnt" smell to it and the kibble noticably was rock hard. Well maybe to most not noticably..but when you are taking pieces and trying to snap them in 1/4's it certainly is :)The dogs didn't seem to notice..but my poor fingers sure did!
I went to the store and the lady only had California Natural, Solid Gold and Innova Reg. and EVO samples. She does carry Canidae but didn't have samples of it. So what are your thoughts on these brands? I gave him some California Natural Lamb and rice kibble with some California Wet food mixed into it. He ate it....Yee haw.......she gave me 6 sample packets to try for free....and some extra little goodies too....the problem is that Toby is really small 5lbs. and needs a small kibble. These samples she gave me come in small bite sizes but I don't thinks she gets the small bite Canidae. Are any of these brands as good as Canidae??? thanks again.
Pipi is only 4.2 lbs right now and has been eating Canidae since she was about 3 lbs without any problem. The kibble is quite small (like the size and shape of bb pellets) Toby should have no problems at all with the size of their kibble if you should decide to go with Canidae.
Canidae, Innova, California Natural, and Solid Gold are all supposed to be great foods. There are people that really like the EVO too but the high protein level in a dry food without the moisture to go along with it like in canned or raw worries me. I had my cats on EVO for a bit and it gave them both bad diarrhea. I think the high protein was too much for them. I'd be worried the high protein would cause kidney damage in some dogs. I feed my cats a variety of food (all premium brands) but Lacy only eats Nature's Variety Raw. I've been hearing really great things about Canidae lately so you might want to give that a try.
