My 11 month old had started itching in April/May when I got home from vacation. So we tried two rounds of steroids and benadryl. Nothing so now I start a food trial for twelve weeks. I decided enough and went to a dermatology specialist. Low and behold we have sarcoptic Mange. How did we get it? First I blamed my husband's business dogs. but now after much thought and now reading on the web. She caught and did her thing with a squirrel just prior to my leaving. So we are on our third round of steroids and protocol which seems to be working. Mange is so difficult to diagnose since only 20% of the mites are ever found under a microscope. But my vet never considered Mange because she is a "well groomed cared for only pet" and the fact that no one else in the house humans as well were itchy or had a rash. But my impatience seems to have paid off in that she is being treated and already a reduction in this incessant scratching. Her demeanor is returning and she is again becoming a playful pup. So I guess that her vermin hunting fun is over but not without consequences.
