Jack started at 2am...waking me up to go outside...He had diarrhea....and has gone 3 other times since then...just a few minutes ago, he threw up...mainly foamy saliva...he ate a 1/2 a bowl of his food this morning and I made him some boiled chicken and white rice with lots of water for dinner. He wouldn't eat it. He was drinking a normal amount of water all day but now he is just sleeping. What I thought this morning was he was sick due to yesterday he ate our new puppy's food canned, chicken and rice...and we gave him some left over filet of beef as a treat after dinner....In addition, he ate a couple of small flavored raw hide sticks. My worry is we leave for a trip to Holland tomorrow evening. He will be sat by my two daughters. Any idea what it could be? Should I give him anything medicine wise? If he is not improved by morning, I plan on taking him to the vet. I just hate to leave him being sick. What suggestions do you all have? One other thing yesterday, he was chewing on a pine tree branch that had fallen from the tree....could this be it???
I know that worrisome feeling of leaving when a doggie is not feeling well, it stinks!! Are your daughters old enough to take care of him while you are gone and get him to the vet if needed? Probably so if they are staying behind when you go on this trip. yes, eating something like he did could certainly upset his tummy while it takes it's course and goes through him. I would take him off his food and give him nothing but white rice and white meat chicken (I think you mentioned you did that) or white rice and lean ground beef cooked on the stove. The medication you would give a canine for the runs and stuff is Metronidazole, it's Flagyl under a new name but you get it from your vet. It's also for Girardia (parasite) but works on the intestinal track. Pepto is something else many people use but my dogs get sick from that because they hate it so much, it does not work. I know it does work for others. Really what you are doing is basically all you can do. No food, bland diet, vet 1st thing in the morning if he's not feeling better. Perhaps you would want to take him to the vet anyway just so you go away knowing that he's been looked at and medicated/treated if anything is needed. Would certainly give you peace of mind if nothing else. Hope he feels better, have a great trip
Oh thank you so much Savannah. Yes my daughters are very responsible 22 & 17....I am going to take Jack in the morning just for piece of mind if nothing else. My baby of 12 years passed away from diarrhea and vomiting last Thanksgiving...and I took her to the vet as soon as it started...got meds and she got worse during the night...and by morning when I took her back to the vet there was no hope! The thing is, my doctor asked me if I wanted him to keep her there and give fluids if needed..but she wasn't dehydrated at that point at all....now I fear the same for Jack...although he is young and Ebony had multiple medical problems.....He loves being brushed and I just spent 20 minutes brushing him...thought I saw a smile on his face....
hi there. How often does he chew rawhides?? They can be very dangerous. If they were small for your puppy, He could have wolfed them down then they expand in his stomach. I worked for a vet as a tech for a while and they never have good things to say about rawhides... some are ok! I would absolutely not feed him anything and give him small amount of water to keep him hydrated. Don't let him wolf anything down. Take him to the vet and tell him he ate rawhides. I can guarantee they will x-ray him. Good Luck
