Came home on the 4th to find my 7 year old french mastiff dead. His appetite had been off maybe two days, was a little lethargic but had played ball with my husband earlier in the day. I just left him for only an hour. We have ben taking great care to insure that he stayed very cool here in the desert. I know that the lifespan is short for these critters but I never saw this coming! He had been to the vet 6 months ago and received a clean bill of health! Any ideas? Needless to say I am heartbroken beyond words. We want to adopt again ( there are many breeders here in Vegas ) but I am worried about setting myself up for more heartbreak.
You can have the vet run tests to see why if you really need the closure He may have just had a heart attack. Had he ever been checked by a cardiologist. It is sad that bigger dogs tend to have shorter lives.
My heart goes out to you and youre family.
Hang in there

bbmother, I'm really sorry about your beautiful dog. There are too many reasons why he could have dropped dead, there's no point speculating. Large breeds do have a shorter life span, and thats one of the really sad things about owning them. I had 2 Rotties for 11 years, and it broke my heart to lose them. They both died of cancer. It seems too young for your dog to die of old age, though. I'm so sorry,it's like losing a member of your family, is'nt it?
I am so sorry to hear you lost your dog! It is so hard to get over loosing your best friend and family member! It takes time to heal when a loss like this happens and during that time just try to remember the good times you had together! Then when you are ready, you can decide if you would like another new canine friend in your life...Take Care.
Wiley-I used the expression as in 'suddenly', and in no way meant to hurt this person. Can you say the same for all your postings? My apologies to the OP, I am indeed very sorry for your loss, and if I worded my response incorrectly, I apologize for that. I know how much it hurts to lose a dog.

very sorry for your loss. Its just so sad when this happens to those of us who passionately love our canine companions. Life always has heartache but I think your baby would want you to go on and love again. You will have the spectacular memories to cherish for life, and will have new ones to again cherish. Condolences.
Hello, I sent you a PM with some information and my website and contact info. I breed these guys and know how you must be feeling. 7 years is a good run with the average Bordeaux lifespan to be 6-8. Hope the information I sent helps! So very sorry for your sad loss :(
I am so sorry to hear of your loss, it is very hard to have to go through. I just lost my Old English Sheep dog after 13 years, I miss her, but always remember the good times you had and the love you both shared.
Yeah I'm feeling for you, too. I'm still upset over losing my beloved Buckwheat, the donkey. He fell ill suddenly and there was nothing else to do after much intervention. It was and still is a sad loss. Still haven't been able to get another one.
