Seeing as how a bassett should weigh 40-55lbs, and a beagle is smaller...yes, your dog is overweight. When you say he is on a strict diet, do you mean a vet prescribed diet? And if so, is it because of the health problems or the weight?
I've heard that thyroid problems are fairly common in beagles. One of our beagles is on the thyroid meds and was over 60 lbs. After being on the meds, and carefully measuring his food he is nearly at his healthy weight. It takes time and the weight loss should be gradual - my vet said the 3 lbs he lost in one month was pretty drastic. Walk, walk, walk! But be sensitive that at his weight he probably aches and gets tired easily after a walk - let him work up to it gradually, but regularly. No treats! If you want to give him something special, try a piece of raw carrot - our guys love it. Good luck!
Hi I also have a beagle-basset mix and yes your pup is over weight. Your pup should weigh anywhere from 45 to 55 pounds if it seems as though it has more traits like those of a basset, or if it has traits more like a beagle it should be anywhere from 30 to 45 pounds.
I have a beagle and a basset- each purebred. Both breeds can easily become overweight simply because they love food. Throwing in a thyroid problem and I can see how yours could be 70 lbs!
I would suggest talking to your vet about proper portion size once you get the medication under control assuming your dog is on thyroid meds. Also talk to your vet about an exercise program which is just as important to your dogs health as is weight management.
Both my girls LOVE their walks and is a simple form of exercise that can really help control weight. It also helps to control mine too-LOL!
Okay i have a question, after seeing that link that pope posted. My Saint is moderate, is that too thin? I feel that he is way under weight. He is only 108 pounds and a saint bernard. I think he would look better being stout! What is healthier, moderate or stout???
EDIT... The more i look at the pictures, i would say he is more between thin and moderate, (closer to moderate) but if he even losses 5 pounds with the weather ( and when he got fixed) he is definatly thin. ( he did gain the weight back, But i can't seem to get him to gain much more than the 108! I even add yogurt to his food, he has a sensitive stomach! I thought that might help with wieght gain and it hasn't!
PS sorry to hijack your thread!
