Does anyone have any idea on about how long it takes to get a puppy potty trained? I had a boxer puppy that we got at 8 weeks old and it took us several, i mean several months and many "time-outs" to get him trained. I'm wondering is it the same time for every dog or is every dog different? I have two new puppies (8 wks) we have started the potty training and i think they are getting the hang of it....although we do still have accidents but mostly b/c i'm not keeping my eye on them all the time. But i was just wondering if all dogs take several months to train or if some take faster than others? And does it also depend on the breed? I hope this does not sound like a stupid question but I have only had boxers and each that i have had i got at around 8 weeks. I was just wondering about other breeds and the time table for training. And also, is it better for me to potty train them or better to enroll them in an obediance trianing class that teaches that for me?
OscarsMomma, it should not take several months to potty train a puppy. What methods are you using, and how much time do you spend with your dogs? Obedience classes are designed to teach the dog how to sit, stay, come, etc, and then you go on to more complicated classes. No obedience school is going to potty train your dog.
I am using the crate method and I have them with me most all day. I work in an office that luckily for me my fiance' owns so i can bring my puppies to work with me and keep them close. I crate them at night and let them out in the morning. When I take them out i tell them in a firm voice "outside" and they follow to their grassy spot and then i praise them while they do their business and when they are done i give them a little treat and praise them more. When they mess in the house and i catch them in the act i clap real loud next to them and say "no-outside" and pick them up and take them to their spot, then i praise and tell them "outside" again and give them a treat. I put them back in the crate for like 30min. or so and when they come out we go outside again. Is that the way to go about it or is their something else i can be doing to make this potty training a little smoother?? Although, as with children potty training is a process that takes time and patience!! I think they are getting used to the crate because they don't whine as much when they go in and they are sleeping more through the night, and when we get up there's no mess in the crate...well, okay so night before last there was a little mess but nothing HUGE. Are we right on track or am i doing something wrong?? Thanks Pen for your advice!!! :)
Well it sounds like you've got the ideal set-up as far as having them with you, in the day time. You could try still taking them out once in the night, and always give a treat when you put them back in the crate. I think you're doing everything right, maybe just try taking them out a little more frequently. Good luck!
I usually try to take them out after they nap, after they eat, in the mornings and at night before we go to bed. I read somewhere that they need to go out like every 30-45 minutes. Is that for real?? That's a lot of trips outside!! And sometimes mine don't always go. I try to watch them and i pretty much think i know their signs now. They get real jumpy and excited when they need to go. And also they do a lot of sniffing around when they need to go. Usually i can just say outside and i think they know the general direction of where to go and what to do. Also another question, do i need to take them at seperate times? It seems like when I take them out they like to play a lot and not always do the deed. I gets challanging to make them stay away from eachother long enough to relieve themselves. How do i go about that??
