I recently have been bringing my dog to the vet because she has been throwing up and diarrhea, and she has broken out in a rash it was red bumps what look like pimples. Well I had her tested because of the recalls from the food and her kidneys are wonderful. So does anyone know about food allergies because they just put her on the science diet food z/d has anyone ever had these problems with their dog, she is doing good on the food and she loves it.
ashleyvicknair, I'm confused. The dog food has corn and wheat in it; so even if she loves it, it could be the cause of the diarrhea. If my dogs smell corn they get the runs. What did the vet say was the reason for prescribing the clavamox? What did he think the pimples were? How old is your dog?
I had the same problem with one of my dogs. Turns out that it was a food allergy but the sicence diet z/d did not help at all. She loved the taset of it to, but some dogs eat poop so taset means nothing :) The perscription formulas are super expensive and in my opinion do not work. Science Diet pays for many vets to go through school in return the vets push there foods. My girl had the itchey bumps and lost a bunch of hair as well. Someone thought that she was a rescue! Well I switched to Natural Balance Duck and Potato formula with added Salmon Oil and kelp and now she has the best skin and coat of the bunch. Also do not over bathe your baby. Dogs are different than us and need to have there oils on there skin. When you do bathe, use a mild oatmeal shampoo and rinse very well in cool water, warm will dry out the skin more.
The bumps can also be an environmental or airborn allergy The food and other supplaments will help but you may need an allergy pill of some sorts during the bad times. My vet suggested Chloraphenairmane (sp) it is the antihistamine in Chlortrimatron without the extended release. You can get it for about $2 a bottle at Fry's in the pharmacy. Ask your vet first about the dosage and your breed of dog. But with us we can give 2 pills every 4 hours when itching is going on. I love it because it does not make the dogs sleepy, works better than the Benadryl on my dogs too.
The hair loss is most likely due to the scabbing of the bumps when the bumps stop comming then the hair will grow back but it takes time :) Hope this helps, I hate the itcheys!
