i was wondering I have a lady wanting me to buy her pom. she is 4 months old and is loseing her hair.she said it is due to loseing the puppy coat and season.she is not bald just short hair looks really scraggly.she said it should all be back in a month.does this sound right? any help would be greatly appreaicted
The baby in my avatar is right in the middle of the "uglies". Not only is it normal, for them not to shed their puppy coat is an indicator that the puppy probably has black skin disease. BSD is a common problem in Poms which results in patchy coat loss(large bald spots Google BSD or x linked alopecia) and shortens their lifespan.
Most breeds of canines go through a natural phase called Blowing Coat. In the breed you are speaking of I do not know if it can happen as early as 4 months. In my breed IT DOES NOT. I agree to have a guarantee wellness exam with a vet and ensure there is not something more here, but rather this normal phase of blowing coat. During this phase, all the dead undercoat comes out, they get really ratty looking, and then the new hair/fur comes in. Depending on the dog/breed this can happen 1 time a year, I have had a dog blow coat a few times a year. Breeding females blow coat with litters. They go out of coat after pups are born due to hormonal changes, and then are back in coat by the time the next heat cycle is taking place.
I think if the lady is trying to sell you her 4 month old pom, I would be asking lots of questions. Such as: Is she the breeder of this pom? If not, who is? and has the breeder been contacted, or will she give you that contact information? Is the dog registered? And with what kennel club? Does the dog come with a written sales contract and written health guarantee? Is the dog being sold to you as a pet that will be spayed or neutered? Or are you getting this dog to breed? Have the parents of the pup had genetic and health testing done prior to there producing this 4 month old pup? I sure there are many more questions to be asked of this person, so others please feel free to jump in there. DO NOT JUST BUY A DOG ON A WHIM. Sounds like that may have been what the lady who is trying to sell it to you did. Pom's are also prone to heart issues.
He's your friend, your partner, your defender your dog.You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours faithful and true to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to worthy of such devotion
My sister owns two poms and her 10 year old started losing his beautiful coat at around 8 months old. After many trips to the vet and lots of $$ spent he did indeed suffer from black skin disease. He lost all of his fur and only has the ruff around his neck so he looks like a bald lion. You really should check into this situation closely if you are considering this dog.
No this is completely normal. Its called the "puppy uglies" or the "pom uglies", google it and you'll get all the info you need. But if you're thinking about buying her you should ask alot of questions, get all her info and health records and such and make sure you're getting a good deal. Some people like to charge huge prices just because its a small breed even though they don't have the quality to back it up.
