Have heard this before, but not sure.....

I had heard once awhile back about tattoos on the inside ear of a dog is sometimes a mark of them having been in a livestock type auction before. Tattoo number to coincide with cage number at the sale, or something similar.
Anyone else ever heard of this?
People are like slinky's, not really good for much. But its still fun to push them down the stairs.

I dont know about that, but dogs imported from Russia, must be tatooed. I think some may be inside the ear also. Annies tattoo is on her belly, on the inside of her back thigh. It matches her import/export pedigree.
If you are a dog and your owner suggests that you wear a sweater, suggest that he wear a tail.

Mine have always been tattooed on the belly inside of the leg as well.
These are 2 digit numbers inside the ear?
People are like slinky's, not really good for much. But its still fun to push them down the stairs.

Actually if you google "dog ear tattoo+puppy mill" you will find several references to this practise. Although that being said, the first dog I owned was tattoo'd inside her ear at the vet the same time as she was spayed :) It is also common for racing greyhounds to have ear tattoos.

I believe the site of the tattoo is totally up to the disgression of the vet and owner of the dog. My daughter has one of my dogs, and I was furious when her vet tattoed his ear. I micro-chip all my dogs now; so it's not an issue.

gawd, I thought they stopped tattooing ears 20 years ago when dogs started showing up in research labs with ears missing.

Apparently not, and my daughter's dog was tattoed by a vet in a fairly large city, not by some vet from out in the bush somewhere. I was disgusted when I found out, and my daughter did'nt realize she had a choice, nor was she told about micro chipping. I blame myself for that, because I assumed the dog would be micro-chipped.

Some instances tattooing is the law. Before a dog can leave Russia to come here to the United States, it MUST be tattooed. Its the law.

I found it odd that the most recent rescue dog we got in has not one but 2 tattoo's, one on each ear. And plain 2 digit numbers...one ear is 39 the other is 60, you can tell one is an older tattoo it is well faded compared to the other.

Dusty, can you picture a big tattoo on one of your Frenchie's ears? Thats what my daughter's dog looks like, and he has larger ears, too just to make things worse!

They also tatoo ears of dogs born in Hungary. I have 2 that I imported and they both have a tatoo in the right ear it matches the pedigree. Silly thing is that they do it when the dog is a pup and as an adult it is very hard to read. I am so glad that we can microchip our pups much less traumatic for the dog and better identification too!

I am so sorry that happened to your daughters dog. I have heard of micro chipping and intend to ask the vet about it when we take ours in the next time.

I can imagine the difference of how it feels to get those #s tattooed on, and the small pinch of the needle they load the microchip into. Some of my puppies don't even squeak when they get their micro chip

I dont know about tattooing dogs but I dont think it would hurt all that bad.
over all my tattoo was not painfull (my sholder did kill me but its a large piece so that was a small part of it) there is a lot of itch the next few days but no paim after unless you get hit there while it is healing.

If its done when they are getting fixed then they dont feel it, im sure the after feeling of a small ear tattoo is nothing compared to the after feeling of being fixed.

i wouldnt tattoo my dogs but i dont think its a mean thing to do.

can you remove microchips?

yes, a micro chip can be removed by a vet but the dog has to be put under and it has to be taken out. It's not as easy or simple as putting the chip in.

Yuck, I didnt realize tatoos were still being done to dogs. I can imagine in other countries perhaps (even if this is not fair to say) if vet medicine is not as advanced or society is not as advanced, the old school is tatoo. But here in the states, I had hoped tatoo was long gone with the id of a dog. Micro Chip should take over.

there is still a service out there that does tattoo dogs and cats. I was a rep. for the service but they of course had some problems, just like anything else nothing is full proof.
But if you tattoo a dog it should be on the belly or inside the leg. a cat should be in the ear. that is if it is done here in the U.S.A. It is a good idea, but it is hard to make it look good and when the animal grows you can't always read it. They have a new chip that will track the animal if it goes missing.

Monkey....I have tattoos as well, as well as my dogs having been tattooed. They are usually done while they were sedated for another procedure, so its not painful

I was only questioning the possible background to a certain type and place of these tattoos.
One tat in one ear with a simple'39' looks to be the newest one, then a viibly older tat in the other ear as a simple'60'. I had just recalled hearing one of these type of tats beong used on animals sold at auctions and the number referred to the cage number the dog was in at the sale.

German Shepherds are still tattooed quite a bit. I think it is a requirement to show to a German judge. It actually takes all of 1 second to make the tattoo and maybe ten more to rub in the dye paste. The tattoo is a series of numbers made of tiny pins and then a green paste is rubbed into the ear. The pups yelp about as long as they do with a microchip shot and are over it right away. I would imagine one on the inner thigh would really hurt.

Good question!

I know that two out of the four, of my family shelter dogs have tattoos.

They where tattooed on the month they came into the shelter and was circled, with different color ink. This was on the tummy.

I asked about it and they said in such an area, each shelter has it's own style of tattooing.

Three are Microchipped and Buddy has nothing.

I think out here in the sticks they still tattoo because most places still don't have scanners.

I have also asked vets and they told me the same thing that each vet has his "own code". Kind of like their signature.
