I have a 5 month old Boxer and 4 yr old Dachshund. We currently live in an apartment and they stay in a crate while we are at work (about 8 hours). We are moving to house with a yard in a couple of weeks and we are trying to decide if we should let them be outside during the day. We want them to be able to go to the bathroom when they have too and be more comfortable. The yard is fenced high enough so that they can't see outside and there are no neighbors on the side of the yard they would be enclosed in. They would have shade, shelter, food and water. The ground is brick so they can't dig out. It would be a couple days a week and not on hot/cold days. I just don't know how I feel about it because I don't completely trust that they will be safe but I know they are not happy to be in the crate all day and then again at night. I want them to be able to transition into being outside during the day and hopefully sleeping in the house - not in a crate - at night. Any tips or suggestions? Thanks.
I would first start by leaving them outside while you are at home but not out with them. See how they react and what they do - watch them from inside the house. Then I would leave them out a hour or so at a time while you are gone. It is great that you already have a fenced in yard for them along with shelter etc.
I am a HUGE believer in listening to your gut. Your gut will tell you yes or no. I also think IF you were going to try this, you need to move into it slowly, taking quite a while for them to get used to the change. Chances are they will love it but in fairness to eveyone involved, including the dogs, take it slowly. Start by spending lots of time outside with them, get a feel for how they behave, you know their personalities. Do they calm down? Do they enjoy it? You will know. Good luck
A doggie door is what I was going to suggest too. To me they are a life saver. You can at least leave them and know they can go to the bathroom and still have their water and food inside where it doesn't get dirty and hot. Mine only go out to go potty and they are right back in. Its either too cold or too hot for them. lol!!
The dogs I have are constantly inside. The only time we let them out is to potty. I think our Doberman prefers to be outside a lot because he'll whine until we let him out. We figure he needs to potty, but when we let him out he'll wander around the yard. Sniffing every inch of our lawn. It's more we don't prefer to keep them outside because they will dig holes and I wouldn't want to come home and find a hole under our fence and our babies missing!
