I have a 10 month old female chihuahua. When I first got her she was doing so well with going to the bathroom in her litterbox, but over the last 5 months she is terrible with it. Instead of using the litterbox, she will go right beside it or in other areas of the house. It is becoming a real problem because my parents' dog is now catching on to her behaviour and is now also using my parents carpet as her litterbox. Please help, I need to get this undercontrol. I have had suggestions about giving her a smack, but because she is so small I am hesitant to do this in fear that I may break her hip.
Can someone please give me some insight on what to do?
Just curious but why are you trying to litter box trane her? Can she not be house broken, i mean like go outside and potty? Have you tried crate training her? Like when she goes on the carpet or anywhere but the litter box, give her a firm "NO" and put her in her crate for like 15 minutes or so, ignoring her, and then let her out and take her to the litter box. Put her in it and then praise her and tell her good girl and tell her "potty" and give her treats. That way after a few repititions she'll understand that going in the litter box is good and anywhere else she get's in trouble!!
We decided to go with litter box training because we have quite a few hawks in our area and we have heard of people in our area leaving there small dogs outside and the hawks mistake them for prey and take off with them. As well in the winter time it gets to about -40 degrees celsius. So we pretty much decided on the litter box training to keep her safe. We haven't tried crate training, but it is a really good idea. Thank you for your response.
