I adopted a 6 yr old minpin about a month ago. When I picked her up from the humane society, she had a cough going on. I did too, so I figured we were sick together. Her coughing has stopped but after she runs hard she seems to have an attack, she wheezes and coughs. Sometimes it'll just happen for no reason. I have never had a dog with breathing problems so, can sdomeone please advise me what I can do for this girl when she has an attqck. Or is there something I ccan give her to prevent the attacks or at least keep them from getting worse over time?
Have you had her to the vet yet? You should get her thoroughly checked out, it might not be respiratory at all If she is 6 years old and coughs for no apparent reason, she may have a heart condition;so it's very important to get her into the vet as sso as possible. What is her energy level like?

Her energy level is good, she is very active. SHe saw a vet right before I picked her up. She got spayed and shots, they would have heard the cough. It does seem to be in the lungs because I can feel the rattling in her when she wheezes and I'm holding her. But, what would make you say its her heart? Are there other symptoms I should watch for?
Ginnye, it's a really good sign that she has lots of energy, but it would be the best idea to get her checked as soon as possible because of the coughing, and the rattle in her chest. It may be a sign of fluid in her lungs caused by congestive heart failure, which is a treatable condition, with a diuretic, that's why it's very important to get her examined, to rule that out. In the meantime, make sure she is not stressed by heat, and excessive exercise, and let us know how she is.
Kennel Cough is one of the most highly contagious canine deseases. It goes through a kennel, a show ring in hours. The incubation time can be slightly different for any given dog, but yes, your other dogs would have definitely been coughing by now.
