We have a Spitz that has just turned 5 mo. We just started putting a collar on her to no avail..SHE HATES IT! She cries the whole time it is on, scrapes her neck on the floor, and just plain acts like its the worst of all possible worlds. She usually manages to get the thing off when we are not looking and then hides it somewhere. We've tried the lightest collar you can buy to no avail. She is determined to win here. We have never had this problem before with any other Spitz. What do we do? HELP!
not sure I have the answer but why start at 5 months? My pups go home to their new owners with little puppy collars on at 8 weeks (labs).
Try rewarding her. Collar on, do a fun activity, reward her and slowly build into getting her used to it. Distraction for short periods of time while she is getting used to it may be the answer. Or, maybe someone else will have a better suggestion LOL
I agree with Savannah, a bit late, but the dog will eventually get used to it. I personally prefer harnesses, and I don't know if that would make a difference or not. The main thing to bear in mind is just to stick with it, put it on for short periods, and keep doing it until she's used to it. It will happen, good luck!
I'm with pen on this one. my pups are almost 3 months and i started them on collars and they don't like it either. they don't cry but they scratch at it like they have some kind of disease!! it has taken a few trys but they are getting used to it now....when they itch at it i try to distract them with a toy or calling their name or a treat but they are getting used to it. they don't itch at it as much. just keep putting on your pup and it might take a few weeks or so but they'll get used to it!! it's definatly a process though!! good luck!!! :)
