So i just got back from the vet with Lila (she weighs 44 lbs now) and the vet said that she has an inverted jay-jay and that I have three choices 1 - I can let her go through one heat cycle before spaying her and hope that it corrects it (note that I don't have a fence in yard and there are about 4 intact males that live in the yard behind me) 2 - I can spay her and then after she heals from that they can perform another surgery to take some of the skin off that's around it and bring it out. 3 - I can spay her and then NOT have the other surgery and just try to keep her clean and dry all the time. To prevent infection.
I asked how severe her case was and they said "extremely" - having never had a girl dog before I thought that she looked a little funny there but that otherwise she was just smaller there than other female dogs that I have seen.
Have you guys heard of this before? and, can you offer some advice?
Right now I'm leaning towards option #2 because I don't know that anyone that may have to watch her for me when we're out of town would be able to keep up with the maintenance.
oopsie - just realized that this should go in medical questions category. sorry.
absolutely I know about this. In most cases a heat cycle will actually take care of the problem. It's not a guarantee but certainly I would do this first. Just make sure she does not get out HAHAHA..
Seriously, because your vet described this as "extreme" you may indeed need to have the surgery also but.. definitely try a heat cycle.
On another note, I do not know if the vet warned you but bitches that have inverted vulvas must ensure their weight does not become a problem. Over weight dogs who also have invertedness, get lots of infections. This is due to the skin rubbing via wrinkles and other contributing factors. One of my fertility specialists told me (because I have also had experience with this)that she does not see many dogs with serious problems even if it's "extreme", only when the dog is really heavy.
Savannah - she did mention weight. In fact, she said exactly what you just said. I am concerned about that too because she seems to be putting on a lot of weight really fast.
I'm going to talk it over with hubby tonight - if we allow her to go into heat he needs to know that we have to switch doggie duties and he will have to take her for her walks cause I know I won't be able to fight of the bigger dogs that we have around here. Plus, now that I've thought about it for a little bit - I don't want my baby to have to go through two surgeries if she doesn't really have too.
she's eating natural balance - potato and duck. I give her 2 cups in the morning, 1 cup for lunch and then 2 cups for dinner. The vet says that she's at a good weight right now. vet also thought that she was already 6 months too.
when should I start cutting back to two times a day? I think she's is taking after the lab in her the most. What is the ideal amount of food that she should be eating?
Hello, good advice on the surgery ;) I was going to say to wait after 1 cycle myself but had to run after some escaped puppies, lol. They are at that stage now! As for the food I feed the same food you do and I have my 125lb girl, who is now 18mos still a puppy in my book for a mastiff, on 4 cups a day. 2 cups in the morning and 2 at night. She is extreemley active and well muscled not skinny at all. You might want to cut back on the food a bit, it is rich. Try putting some green beans in it if she acts hungry still. :)
Wow, that does sound like a lot of food for that dog. I think I would put her on 1 1/2 cups am and the same in the evening. Then just monitor he weight. With show dogs weight and condition is very important. When we are getting ready for Westminster the dog is weighed every other day and food is measured exactly. About her other issue, I would let her go into her first heat cycle. But I would also get your girl a pair of bitch panties and the spray to mask oders. This helps keep the males away. I would be very careful as to the areas where you walk the dog, so not to have to fight off male dogs. Might be better if you both walk the dog together if possiable. Then if you run into trouble there are two of you to handle the situation.
He's your friend, your partner, your defender your dog.You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours faithful and true to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to worthy of such devotion
Good idea Windy, about walking together. I already got the panties from before when I was concerened that she would go into heat before her spay appointment. I asked about the spray today and the vet said that I can rub VANILLA on her backside.
I have never heard of the vanilla trick but I do know that wearing the panties is very helpful in keeping the odors down. When the panties are on my boys don't go crazy when the panties are off it's nutzvill around here :O) Also helps if you put panty liners or maxi pad with deoderizers built in to them. Change pads often and have a few different pairs of pants so that you can wash them daily and always have a spare pare. We don't like dirty underroos and neither do they! ;)
pet stores sell doggie diapers specifically for this. I use them, most of us use them for dogs in heat in the house. I put a sanitary napking inside the doggie diaper actually, works great. I do need to use masking tape sometimes to hold it on but that's no biggie.
i have never heard of an inverted jay-jay. Now that i know what you were refering to i have to laugh. I have a son named Jaymes. We call him jay-jay. He is going to die laughing when he hears his name is also a dogs private parts ! lmao
If you are a dog and your owner suggests that you wear a sweater, suggest that he wear a tail.
I have doggie diapers for my Bulldog (English) because I alos have an un neutered male Boston in my home as well (hey are both show dogs so I can't spay her or neuter him) and though it is harder when they live together the doggie diapers really do work, plus I would rather clean a diaper than to have to clean every surface her rear touches!
