My bitch had her first litter of puppies 8 weeks ago and is still bleeding. It is not heavy bleeding but brownish red thick discharge. We took her to the vet after whelping and she was given a clean bill of health. So i am wondering what the normal length of time is for her to be bleeding after whelping?
bleeding is very normal. just like a human they bleed slightly, remember it's still sore and swollen. if the bleeding gets worse or if she doesn't stop by the end of the week then i would take her back to the vet just to be sure!
My last litter the mom bled for 3 months untill it stopped compleetly. Vet said that possibly one of the placenta did not fully detatch and left a small part behind. Everything was back to normal on her next cycle. My current mama has pups 5 weeks old and is still having intermitent bloody discharge. She had a C-section and I know that ther is no placenta left behind. This will last a while it's normal :) But yes do definatly speak to your vet, better to be safe.
I've had bitches still passing a discharge for 8-10 weeks. If you notice the colour change to a very bright red, or a nasty odour, there's cause for concern, but otherwise I would'nt be worried, and if you are call the vet to be sure.
