Mandy and Tina are like two different dogs since Max died. I know they are still mourning but now they won't eat. I have had Mandy on k/d for about 2 weeks and all went well at first. Even Tina was eating it and vet said it would not hurt her. I have been feeding Welliness for about a month now to Tina and some to Mandy for a little bit of a change. They have dry out at all times. I don't know how to get them to eat and Mandy can't just eat anything with the kidney disease. I put the food down and pick it up and throw in the trash. This stuff is about 2.oo a can. I am not complaining at all about the cost because we do and have done everything for our babies but to just toss it everytime is getting flustrating. Help, I need help. The vets do not have any compassion when it comes to something like this, because it is just feed them this and thats that. Well, if they won't eat and they have not eaten for 2days now except for their treats.
Thanks Gunny. I am just a worry wart I guess. I don't want to change them again because I think Welliness is a good food and it has a low protein count which Mandy has to have and I will try what you said. Just try to wait them out. I know they have always been spoiled rotten.
Sandysbabies, my suggestion to you is to offer the food, and refridgerate it if it's not eaten within a reasonable amount of time. Just put a little bit down to begin with. I would even go as far as to open the can, take it all out and freeze it in small baggies. As long as the dog is drinking she will be fine. I don't think she will starve herself, and will eventually eat, and then you can go back to your regular routine. Also, I would cut out the treats, if not altogether, then substantially.
What really makes it hard is, I always fed Max seperate and Tina and Mandy together. Now that Mandy has to have a special diet, it makes it hard. She thinks Tina is getting something better than her if I feed them seperate. Tina needs the protein and Mandy can't have the same food, so its flustrating. What I have put in the treat ball is k/d, so its not really like the snacks they usually get. Pen, your suggestion about giving them just alittle is good, because what I have been doing is putting alittle in a plate and if they don't eat it then pick it up and put in the frig. until next time.
Eeven if you feed them at the same time, can you just put one thing on top that looks the same; so little smarty pants does'nt think she'd getting ripped off? There has to be a way to outsmart these dogs!
How old is Tina? Most veterinarians recommend a lower protein diet for "senior" dogs anyway. Would it be that terrible for both of them to eat the K/D? You're supplementing with the Wellness anyway? Another trick that helps some animals eat (works great with cats and sometimes dogs) is to heat the food up in the microwave. It intensifies the smell and encourages them to eat. Of course with an animal that is not "sick" this may just increase her spoiled nature... :)
We were have a problem with raven not wanting to eat dog food....my fault LOL ;). But my mom said when see gets hungry she will have to eat it. So that is what we did just left the food and it worked she ate the next day. It was hard for me i wanted to slip her food so bad but if i kept that up she would never eat dog food again. LOL
