I have a 3 year old male cat named Owen. A year ago my daughter moved back home and brought him with her. Owen does this weird thing where he will jump up on the sofa, bed, or where ever and he starts kneading like cats do but I've noticed that he seems to get sexually aroused and his hips start to spasm...Now this cat is fixed and I can't stand when he does this....I tell him "NO" and push him off the sofa when he tries to do this behavior...Why does he do this and how can I stop him? Usually it is only with me that he does this...My husband says he's in love with me...Gross...anyway...I didn't see a post about this anywhere on this forum and hope someone knows what to do.
I had a cat that did this. I probably got him fixed too late (8 months) so it was MY fault. By too late I mean that he had experienced orgasm. He'd make love to my shirt or sock from the hamper once in a while.
I just accepted it because he was just a sweet little animal doing what his body told him to do. Animals don't have moral compasses so how can it be disgusting? It's disgusting to you because you think the poor little guy should know better or is doing it on purpose.
I never tried to stop him from doing it and I don't think it would be possible anyways. You'll never get him to go to church or read the Bible. Just accept him for who he is and chill.
Sorry, I totally disagree with you. I do not like this behavior, I did not say it was disgusting. It may be instinct however I do believe that an animal like children need to be trained to do or not do the things you want them to do. I suppose you think it is ok for a male dog to hump your leg?? I'm sorry, I don't think it is ok to allow this sexual behavior and if this wonderful cat is to live in our house it has to abide by our rules...therefore, I plan on using a squirt bottle when he does this, and say NO...and try to have him lay down and let me pet him instead of him getting off on me. I wouldn't let my kids do whatever they wanted whenever they wanted and I am sure not going to let my animals do what ever it is that they want regardless of whether they have morals, instinct or whatever....
I signed up at this website called Petplace.com and I get daily emails on cat behavior with tips. They have this area called "Ask Dr. Jon" and you can submit questions to get a professional opinion. Maybe he can give you ideas or you could even try calling your vet. My vet has staff who have taken classes on behavior. And they answer questions for free on the phone. I agree with you completely. Just because it's natural doesn't make it acceptable. Scratching furniture is a very natural behavior as well but it doesn't mean I'm going to let my kitties do it. The water idea works like a charm. Hopefully it will work for you too.
Cats also have the instinctual behavior of clawing the furniture but no one says " just accept it and chill" Usually they recommend a squirt bottle. Maybe it will work for this behavior as well?? Get a spray bottle or squirt gun and let him have it when he does what you disapprove of. It`s worth a try.
I have also heard of noise bombs - some kind of beeper or squealing noise maker that you set off near the cat when it is doing something you do not want it to. - Again , worth a try. Good luck to you :)
"Cats also have the instinctual behavior of clawing the furniture but no one says " just accept it and chill" "
Actually I probably would because I don't sweat my cats clawing the couch. The cats do less damage to it then my 3 human boys do.
OP honestly I don't have much advice. I have 2 cats and I have never had this issue. But seems to be picking him up and removing him from the situation and telling him no would do the trick over time. But you have to be patient. He is not gonna learn this new rule over night. And he will need to be reminded of the rules everytime he does this.
The weird thing is he never ever had this behavior until he moved here with my daughter. And only does this when he jumps up for attention from me...but recently, I have seen him do this while "kneading" soft throw blankets, the dogs fluffy bed, and even my fluffy robe! I filled two water bottles today and will start this immediately.
