My 11 week old boxer drinks A LOT of water!!!I mean like he'll drink and entire water bowl (about the size of a cereal bowl) full of water and he wants more!!! And it seems like his appetite has slacked off a little..usually he'll eat like his normal 3/4 cup of food and he's a happy camper but here lately it seems that when he eats he doesn't eat it all. I feed him and my 9 week old together and they like to switch bowls and eat of the others and go back and forth is that a habbit that i need to break now or will they eventually grow out of it? I don't want them to fight over food when they get bigger and right now they don't fight over it they just keep eating like it's no big deal. My main concern is the water issue. How much is too much? And should i really be concerned about his food intake or could it be b/c it's hot and maybe he's just not that hungry? Oh and i feed them the same time everyday 8am and 6pm and i feed the same amount as well. (vet reccomended amounts)
Drinking alot of water is a sign of diabetes. I would take him to the vet and have him checked out to be on the safe side. Hope its not, we just lost one of our schnauzers to diabetes. He had it for 2yrs., its a devastating disease.
definitely too much water. Sandy's suggestion is a good one. I sometimes have not only a pup that drinks too much, but splashes it all over. Take the water away. With the heat, we do need to watch and ensure they are hydrated and getting enough. He may just love the water. He's eating less because he's drinking so much and it's filling him. Nothing wrong with calling the vet and just making sure all is ok. Also assuming no other medication is being given that would perhaps make him more thirsty like Pred or something? For house breaking purposes, also need to cut back so he wont have to go all the time LOL
With respect to food, yes separate the food dishes and feed in 2 different areas if needed. You want them to respect the others food and not go into it. Even if you are feeding the same food and same amounts, their going back and forth means they are eating different amounts. Are these babies you are keeping? You may want to feed in separate crates if that's the case.
I called my vet just now and asked her about his water intake. I told her that it's only been like that for the past few days and she said (it was the vet asst) that it's probably due to the increase in tempature that's making him drink more. She told me to measure how much i give him and then watch and time how long it takes him to drink it. She said to call back around lunch time tomorrow and we'll see where to go from there. Diabetes scares me...i pray so hard that he doesn't have it. Maybe it's just becuase it's gotten so hot lately. And i don't keep it below 76 during the day and up until we go to bed so maybe with all the running and playing he does he gets too hot?! We'll see!! Thank you savannah for your help!! You're great!:)
Be sure to ask your vet and just monitor his water intake to give the vet an actual accounting of how much. There are several conditions that might cause him to drink. And it may be that you just think it is too much. Your vet's advice is the best one to follow. Most would answer your question over the phone.
Everyone has a photographic memory.... Some just don't have any film.
you're welcome. Janders is correct too. one thing.. try and get the VET, not just the vet tech, have him return the call if necessary. Techs are incredible, love ours to death, but sometimes we need to speak to the vet. Good point Janders, vet on the phone!!
My pup is doing great today!! I gave him his normal food amount and i measured 1.5 C of water yesterday when i fed him at 6 and he didn't drink it all even when we put him to bed at 10 he still a some left...so maybe i was over reacting. He ate all of his food in like no time!! I was so happy!!! I am feeding my pups in different rooms now and it seems to be working...both have eaten all food and have slacked off on the water!! Even after running a playing outside last night they still didn't come and gulp it down. I guess my mommy instinct just kicked in a little too quick!! :)
