I could use some guidance…My husband and I are looking for a reputable breeder of mastiffs. We live in Maine, so I have been looking for a mastiff breeder in the New England area. I heard recently that it is not wise to purchase mastiffs in Me because they are inbreeding.
Second part, while we have decided on a mastiff. But have been debating between all of the varieties. I’m thinking Bull Mastiff, and my husband loves all of the different ones we’ve come across. Any suggestions?
Neither one of us has raised a mastiff before. We have done a fair bit of research and in general this seems to be a breed that fits us. My previous dog was a lab mix that I got from the kennel 16 years ago. He passed last year. My husband has had 4 medium-large dogs. I had planned to visit some breeders to get to know them and the breed better, but after hearing about the Maine breeders, I’m feeling stuck.
there happen to be good Mastiff breeders here, they will respond to you I am sure. Let them educate you big time. I work with Labs, can't help you out. Be really sure you work with ONLY good good breeders for this breed. so very important. Good luck with the journey.
1. genetic testing with respect to problems that specific breed has, OFA (hips/elbows) CERF or ACVO clear (eyes), Optigen for PRA, etc... in this breed, I am not sure so you would need to ask the breeder. GET COPIES of certifications.
2. REFERENCES REFERENCES REFERENCES
3. How are adults kept, where are the puppies kept, etc...
4. AKC registered NO other registry other then CKC which is Canadian Kennel Club.
5. pups are sold on Limited Registration purposes for no breeding to pet homes.
I have already PM'd a breeder here that I believe works with Mastiffs. She will be in touch, she's not here right now. She will let you know that she's a friend of mine so you can connect the dots. I'll e mail her too. She's great. I THINK she's with Mastiffs LOLOL really I'm not familiar with the breed so forgive me, other then I think they are beautiful. Also, if I happen to be wrong and she's not Mastiff, certainly I can help you just because I know what to look for in a breeder. Just send me a link to a web site etc... PM it to me, do not put it here.
I have an English Mastiff puppy that is 9 months old. I raise Great Danes and I was told this breed was just like danes. I have found that this is one of the laziest dogs I have ever seen! She is nothing like the breeder told me she was. It's best to go see the parents of any puppy you want to buy. Also get names of people who have purchased a puppy from the breeder you are interested in and get their comments.Good luck
Hello, I breed Dogue De Bordeaux mastiffs. These guys are still a rare breed so are not full fledged AKC dogs yet but can be registgered as AKC-FSS. For this breed of dog that is an acceptable registry but most breeders will have there dogs registered with UKC (United Kennel Club) and ARBA in the United States and with FCI as an international registry. Important you realize that FCI is the GOOD registry not FIC! I can explain much more about this breed and a bit about the others as well. I have a litter if you are interested in this breed and will be glad to help you in locating a good breeder of this or another mastiff breed. I know that it can be hard to find local breeders at times with the quality you are seeking. I have brought 3 dogs to me from the other side of the world, LOL, there wings are tired! Anyhoo, I'll also PM you with my contact info. Thanks for the referral Savannah ;)
I prefur to have my Bordeaux with fur instead of a cork and bottle ;)
You definitely should spend real time with the breed before deciding on it.
I believe the different Mastiff breeds are quite distinct in temperament so be certain which suits you best.
Because of the size, I'd recommend that you steer clear of those that have strong guarding/protection drives. Such dogs are not well suited to family/pet homes. The size of these guys is deterrent enough in most cases. IMO, having more than 1 is more than twice the deterrent as well)
