I have a 12 week old english bulldog, he appears happy and healthy but he constantly is scratching at both sides of his belly. I poke around a little bit but it does not seem to bother him and he is eating fine, is this something common or is there reason for concern?
I have two bulldogs and when I first put collars on them they scatched at the collars, but their leggs are so short it looked like they were scatching their bellies.Does your puppy have any kind of rash in that area?
No kind of skin irritation that I can see, we elected not to put a colllar on him we just use a body harness for walking and outdoor activities. I guess I would be more concerned if his appetite was poor but he is eating every meal like it is his last.
scratching for no apparent reason if you're not finding fleas can be a sign of a food problem, allergy. I suggest just checking in with your vet and ensuring all information is passed along. Great he's showing no signs of anything other then the scratching but being itchy is not normal. Check his ears too, are they looking clean and healthy(inside) Many times along with the scratching will be irritated "yucky" ears. They may or may not both show.. check anyway.
Most importantly, tell your vet. Great people here, great information, but vet is a vet.
He does have "yukky ears". Took him to the vet Friday and was given an antibacterial/antifungal with instructions to flush his ears for a week. I mentioned the scratching but did not make a big deal @ it, however, it has gotten worse since. Thanks for the advice!
bingo... scraching and combined messy ears when you are not having a flea problem is very indicative of food allergies. I would immediately call your vet and get onto a holistic food, perhaps Eagle Pack but please discuss with vet. :-) It will only get worse if you do not deal with this now. GL, feel free to PM me if you need anything else.
