i was looking for treat recipies, and saw a warning to check all ingredients you use for chocolate (obviously) and onions. i wasnt aware that onions were bad for pups. i also saw that large quantities of grapes are bad. anyone know of a list anywhere online, or any other foods you wouldnt think to watch out for? thanks!
note that in the case of onions adn chocolate, it takes large amounts to kill a dog. For example, a 70 lb lab would have to eat a chocolate bar that weighs about 5 lbs to be affected negatively. For a 6 lb chihuahua, a candy bar (which weighs about 7 oz) would be dangerous. Onions are more toxic than chocolate, even cooked. It's best just to avoid giving your dog human food all together to be on the safe side.
Wow, thanks for the heads up. I knew about chocolate of course, but onions? I wonder why. I know I've been chopping onions and have a piece fall on the floor and my pug is after it so fast you wouldn't believe it. I'll be more careful from now on, and I'm going to check those links. Thanks!
LOL I asked my trainer who has been involved with Chihuahuas for 30 years what "human food" is bad for dogs. She said onthing, as long as you give it in little portions. She is a breeder & she lets her dogs (not all the time, though) eat pizzea, spaghetti, everything. And not one o her dogs have gotten sick from food. Good luck, but I will keep that in mind. But I don't think Allie will eat onions. I don't want an onion breath dog :D ---Allie the Chihuahua is mine!!! http://www.dogster.com/?41063 Wanna be pup pals?
I will not give my dogs onions but they do get frozen grapes in the summer. But... of course its in moderation. I personally don't know of anyone whose dog died from toxic foods such as chocolate, onions or grapes. My friend's boxer ate an entire bag of hershey kisses one time and nothing happened to her - she never got sick.
my old golden mix ate a whole bag of chocolate chips one night. he didn't die but he threw up and was acting completely spastic like he was on a major caffeine rush. scouts favorite thing is m&m's. of course i wouldn't let her eat a whole bag but a few now and then doesn't hurt her.
in the holistic (sp) books that talk about giving your dogs vegables and fruits say that onions and tomatos are toxic. My mutt use to finish off our taco salads all the time. Mine had tomatos and my moms would have onions and tomatos. He live two months short of his 19th birthday. I also have a cardigan corgi that love chocolate. She eats it all the time. The cats like to play with it durning the night and Penny will always find it and eat it before we know she has it. She is now 12 years old. So like was mintioned before it is all in their weight and size and the quanity that they get. But I just wanted to let you know to watch out for tomatos too.
