We just got our new cockapoo named Waffles. He is a beautiful puppy. I will post pictures soon. Our schedules have changed and for the next 2 months we are going to be away from the house from 10a until 6p. Should we get him a playpen? Should we keep him in the crate the entire time, if so should he have access to water the entire time? Please help Waffles out.
10 weeks is too long to be in the crate for even two hours. Do you have anyone that can stay with him during the day?
At 10 weeks they can't hold their bladder for more than an hour. A good way to measure the how long they can hold their bladder is - for every month of age = 1 hour - this will increase gradually until they are about 8 months. The muscle that controls the bladder isn't even fully developed until about 16 weeks of age.
I do feel you can leave the pup alone for 3/4 hours understanding you need to set up in a way a mess will be there. The sitter should help with that too. An X pen is good, crate is not!! However, you definitely need someone there for an hour once or twice. We all have to work, we have to have pups adjust to that schedule, no problem, but all those hours during the day.. no way and totally not fair to the puppy to have nobody checking on him a couple of times.
I have Louie (13weeks old) in a xpen durning the day when im working. I have the xpen set up im my dinning room in front of the slidding door. I have his crate in the xpen with the crate door open so he can go in and sleep and i have potty pads out side of the crate and also food and water and toys, So louie can sleep and eat and go potty untill i get home. I dont have anyone that will come and let him out during the day and this works for me and he seems to like it. Hes never went potty in his crate, he comes out and goes potty on the pads and goes back in the crate to sleep, or hangs out and plays with toys, Louie is very small hes a maltese so this xpen is huge and gives him tons of room to run and play, When im home i open the door to the xpen so Louie can come out and play with us and the other 2 small dogs i have, and he will come out and play for awhile and then go back in to the xpen and into his crate to take a nap. Also works great when im busy and cnat watch him so he goes back into the xpen. I dont allow Daisy and Bentley in his area at all they will try to play with him threw the xpen and Louie gets all excited when i come home so he can come out and play with everybody. Also this really helps when im at work and i dont have to worry about him just wandering the house or Daisy adn Bentley playing to rough. So far its worked out great for me i intend to keep using this method i have going
