I have a question. I've been reading up alot about canine pregnancy, but have found quite a bit of contradictions. One of the main concerns I have right now is that my female's temp dropped to 98.9 yesterday and has now risen again. Is it normal for the temp to go back up before labor starts or is it supposed to drop and then stay there? I'm just wandering if this was a fluke or if I should stay home all day! I see no other signs of labor, other than no food since yesterday afternoon. Otherwise, she is just sleeping ALL day! She is at day 54 from mating. Thanks for any info!
Day 54 is a bit early for the pups to have a good chance. Very possible you are just nervous...though it is not impossible for her to be going into labor. What is she doing, how is she acting? Where do you have her? Is she restless, digging, pacing, panting?
People are like slinky's, not really good for much. But its still fun to push them down the stairs.
She hasn't started "nesting" although for last couple nights I would say she is more "arranging" her blankets. She's panting whenever she gets up and moves around, but not while sleeping. And she is sleeping whenever she is not going out to pee/poo, or drinking water. She has not wanted to eat since yesterday, absolutely no desire unless, I want to give her some human food! :) So, the temp will STAY down once she will go into labor? And she is day 54 from the tie that I saw - exactly one week before HIS scheduled appointment! I am unaware if they tied together previously - we made an effort to keep them apart - but you know how it goes!
mastiff, it sounds like, though we can be wrong, they tied prior and she's moving to pups. Not eating is a sign, temp is lower then it should be at this point if day 54 is correct however the others are right too, temperature fluxuates and can up to a week prior. I've had that too
Are you set up?
Also, are you able to see the difference in a pant that is from just being hot, and a pant that is part of nesting labor into labor? there is a difference?
I don't know if I would know the difference in panting. I am set up however. We built the whelping box, and I have all supplies ready, in case I need to help a little. I guess I am just more worried about sleeping, or being at the grocery store when she whelps since this is her (our!) first time. She is a great dog and I know she will be a good mommy, but she is a big scaredy cat - and I am afraid she will be afraid when the time comes. So, I guess I am just more wanting to "know" when labor starts then worried about it!
when they pant for nesting the tongue looks really dry and red, and swollen. Heat panting is usually with a wet tongue and drool LOLOL
Most will nest first, your description of moving around blankets or what you said could be nesting. they also dig and stuff, build a nest. As long as you are set up and ready, that's great. You will see contractions (98% of the time) before hard labor begins. Kind of like a human if you have kids...
She won't just go in on her own...she likes to be with us upstairs. But, she doesn't fight it when we put her in there at night or when we have to go out of the house....I don't want babies on my carpet! LOL I am wondering if she will want to go in there or if she will go in on her own. I know that everyone says she will want to be somewhere quiet, comfortable and dark but she ALWAYS was one to be with us.
Thank you everyone for all your advice! It's nice to know that there are people who are helpful! Please add anything else you think I may need to know, or if you want to comment... And I will keep you updated! Thanks again!
Thanks Jackie, i assure you there are others that have a wealth of knowledge too. I'm just around during they day, most of them are around night. Works great for folks that need the help. Appreciate your post, heck you "aint too shabby yourself" hahaha
and by the way, i figured out the problem. This server shows someone on line on the forum, even if they have closed out the entire web site and are no logged in or no longer here!!! grrrrrrrrrrrr found that out today with my own user id.
