I brought home two guinea pigs yesterday =) They are young, and I believe they are females. Before bringing them home I researched them online..and somewhere I read that they do not overeat hay, so I lined their cage with newspaper, and a layer of timothy hay. I woke up today and most of the hay is gone! I put more in there because they love it so much..I'm not sure if this is healthy for them. They like their food too, I've seen them eating it but they seem to enjoy the hay a lot more. So, my question is, can guinea pigs really overeat hay? Should I stop lining their cage with it and use another bedding?
I have 1 male guinea pig. My 5th grade teacher used to have a female guinea pig and she always used to line her bedding with timothy hay and lettuce and things of that sort and she died from it. ( sorry im not to scare you or anything.) Yes, it is possible to overfeed on the hay. Just dont fill the whole cage full of timothy hay. My advice is to feed a LITTLE handfull of it every 4-5 days. Yes, i know they love the hay, but too much could result in health issues. Also, just a bit of advice is to feed your young guinea pigs ALFALFA hay. Alfalfa hay is more suitable for younger guinea pigs. Timothy hay is recommended for older guinea pigs.
