Hey everyone, I could use some help regarding my pup Missy.
We live on a small farm with about 30 cattle. Missy has been around the cows quite a bit in the 3 months we've had her. She's only 5-6 months old, so she's still small compared to them, so naturally she's intimidated by them, but sometimes it does not stop her from barking at them. And that is a habit I want to break. I mean, it doesn't happen every time she's around them, but it does happen. I always say "No bark Missy, hush, shh" things like that, but she can be awful stubborn and will not listen to me, but I don't think she really understands, you know? I don't really know how to teach her to understand that its not okay to do this. Any suggestions? And this also goes along with her being a little "guard dog" around the house, when someone will drive up and get out of the car (someone she doesn't know) she'll have a little fit. She barks and barks and barks, ignoring my pleas to "shh". How do I teach her "No Bark"? Thanks for any suggestions guys!!
Sounds like this puppy needs some socialization skills. Dogs that bark at things they are not familar with are often fearful. Taking her to public places and letting her deal with new surroundings while you are in control (on leash) will help. Also at home, get her used to the cattle by taking her near them on leash. Work on basic obedience commands such as sit and down as you gradually move closer and closer to the cattle. Most dogs will forget about the distraction since they are concentrating on the commands. Taking a basic obedience class is also a great way to gain socialization for your dog to other dogs and stange people. Hope this helps, good luck!
