Louie is 3 months old and today i noticed that his little eyes have green gunk in the corners and seems to be more then just sleepers ( if dogs get those) They really dont seem watery, but i guess kinda look a little smaller like maybe they are bothering him? I have a antibotic can i just start giving this to him or does he need to go to the vet for this? could it be a cold? will it go away on its own? What would any of you do? I did clean out his eyes with a warm wash cloth and clipped away the stray hairs that seem to be in his eyes, being maltese his hair always seems to be in his eyes but i do keep the hair away from his eyes the ones that poke in his eyes i clip short. The green boogers are hardening where its hard to get them out of his hair. He seemed fine yesterday , from what i could tell, as today its very noticable. What can i do? dont seem to bother him like hes rubbing on them or anything like that. But im sure green discharge isnt good and could mean a infection. But how could he get a infection ?? from what? Poor little thing- Any help would be appreciated.... Theresa
Tina has a problem too. Seems like it is more in one eye than both, although she has had it in both. Hers is not green but more crusty. I clean hers with warm water and then the eye cleaner. Comb it all out and the vet give me eye drops to put in them. She told me I could put like the human tear drops in them and it would be okay. Your baby may need an antibotic at first and then just have to keep them clean. Tina's will get like that every few days or sometimes just when she takes a nap. Good luck.
I have always been told that green = infection and to see the vet. I don't KNOW if that is true, but it's what I follow. I don't know how they get eye infections, but my dog gets them quite often and I have ointment I put in her eyes.

Vision is something I would not mess around with... Dogs can get their own version of "pink eye," from various causes, allergies, infections etc. Sometimes it can also be contagious. I would say if his eyes are still goopy/small tomorrow, take him to the vet.
Yes green means infection... I would def take him to the vet, because if it gets progressively worse it could turn into conjunctivitis if it gets inflamed. So ya I would def. go get that looked at and see what the vet prescribes. Good luck!
We took Louie to the vet last thursday and the vet said that these long haired breed dogs get runny eyes because their fur gets in their eyes. Huh??? Of coarse again hubby took Louie i was at work and of coarse didnt say well they wouldnt be green and they get all over his face these crusty eye boogers. Where a few times they were gooped across his eye on his hair so he could barly open his eye, now to me that doesnt sound like just a hair in his eye. I keep his hair cut around his eyes so he doesnt have hair that pokes him. Now this vet is really bothering me i never seem to get anywhere with him and to top it off my dog still has the runs and the vet has no idea why- duhhh!!
You know, my grandmother was a vet tech for 30 years and yes that was a while ago and they did things differently, but we treated a lot of things ourselves with great success.
My rule of thumb, is if you would treat the same problem at home for yourself or your child, they don't go to the vet. If it is something serious enough you would go to the Doctor yourself, take them to the vet.
With eye issues the first think I do is gently wipe out they eye with a warm (lightly) salted water solution 2x per day and 9 times out of 10 the problem will be gone in 3 days.
I am not one for giving antibiotics at a whim for myself or my pets. I think that doctors and vets write a lot of unnecessary scripts to pacify patients and pet owners alike.
Boxers are like cookies you can't have just one :)
I have a three year old boxer and when I got her(Underdog) she had mange and green eye boogers. I'm not one to take my dogs to the vet right away so I surfed the web to find out that Apple Cider Vinegar in their water daily will help a lot of problems. The eye boogers were gone in one week and have not been back since. One other thing the mange problem was corrected with a product called Nu-Stock and can be bought on-line. Both products work wonders.
