I've seen a lot of discussion of the best ingredients for dry or kibbled dog food, not much on canned food.
I recently (gasp!) ran out of dog food before the paycheck came. I had a gift certificate to Target, so I thought I'd go there. Their kibbled dog food was all junk. So I bought several cans of Iams canned food.
Since my dogs are not used to canned I mixed it one meal with rice and one meal with couscous.
Now I know that couscous is durum wheat, which is not necessarily good. But they wolfed it down! The cats wanted to eat it! The cats HATE canned cat food!
Should I feed some canned with their kibble or save it for a special treat? What canned foods are the best? The Iams had lamb by product, but otherwise was much better than the kibble Target had.
The one thing mystifies me is the recommendation that a 70 pound dog eat four or more cans of this food per day if nothing else is fed. That seems like an awful lot.
The dogs are: (1) Miniature Schnauzer or Schnauzer mix, 10, female, spayed (2) Standard Poodle, about a year, 65 pounds, neutered male and (3) my foster, a shepherd mix, 70 pounds, about four, spayed female.
Just to let you know, I had posted this in the recall section and forgot about it until I read your post:
Received this email from a friend. Wanted to pass it on:
Hello Everyone, I want to warn everyone about IAM'S Canned Food. My friend a breeder of scotties bought a case of Iam's canned two weeks ago. She fed this to two litters of pups...one litter 12/wks, another 5/months. Within 3/days all were not well, no vomiting,no diahrea, no temperature. Off to the Vet with pups. They tested for everything.. .all came back negative. Pups literally faded away and 6/died! They were necropsy's and the livers/kidneys sent to the lab for toxicalogy testing. Came back today, found leasions on the livers, and also Aflotoxin poisoning. My friend found the last can in her garbage can and had that tested also came back Aflotoxin. Please spread this around to anyone you know that feeds this food. Iam's & Eukanuba have been informed...also the FDA. This food was NOT on the recall list.
Not trying to scare you, but you just never know these days.
Most are not keen on using canned food, so never much debate or discussion on it. lol, watch now your kids will be spoiled and not want their kibble without some canned in it, lol
People are like slinky's, not really good for much. But its still fun to push them down the stairs.
Aflatoxin is caused by a mold that grows on corn. The only corn ingredient in the lamb and rice canned Iams food is corn oil. I have a difficult time believing that any significant amount of cans using corn oil containing aflatoxin could exist without the FDA getting involved.
Aflatoxin was the cause of so many dog deaths from Diamond dog food a year or more ago.
Here are the ingredients of the Iams canned lamb and rice. The site also says that 2.5 cans per day for a 70 pound dog. That seems more reasonable. But it has only 9% protein, is that enough? It also says over 70% moisture. So is it a good value?
CatDogMom,if you look on the can at the list of ingredients, you will see that canned food contains a very high percentage of water, or moisture, as the company refers to it. That would explain the 4 can daily requirement. Personally, I don't feed it to my dogs, because in my opinion there are much better options. Canned food has it's place in certain instances, but as a regular diet I don't recommend it. I would rather cook up a batch of brown rice, vegetables and meat of some description, and know exactly what's in it. It's a matter of personal choice , really.
If you are going to feed or use canned, I'd go with Merrick. All my dogs have always loved it (when I used to give it occasionally), and it was the ONLY way to get Norman to eat. The ingredients are all human grade, and heck, if you wanted to eat it you could. Smells good enough.
I use dry food and every once in a blue moon I might mix a very little can food to get my dogs to take a pill or medication. Can food makes their teeth soft and if you keep feeding canned food alone they won't be able to eat dry because of weak teeth. It also makes running stools. That's my dogs, I have Great Danes and Bulldogs.
