Hello...This is just some information I have gathered recently while trying to find a home for a pair of cats that were left on our property. I posted an ad in petfinder.com and got immediate response. There were 3 people interested in adopting these sweet cats. I thought they were interested because the cats are oriental shorthairs and they are not that common. Then I got suspicious at their eagerness and started to ask for references. These people disappeared after that. Apparently Dateline did a story on this scam. These predators are from the African countries, offer to ship, are always obviously concerned about a pet...really love your pet...who's name they never use, and are very specific about 'shipping.' They will then tell you that they have a cashier's check 'from a client' in a huge amount, usually 5k or so, and can you go ahead and give them the remainder? Of course it's a phony check, no good, and the animals are ending up (for those stupid enough not to check out a potential adopter in person) in depots, starving or worse- and if they do make it to Africa, they are eaten as 'bush meat.'
A most cruel, horrible scam...and yet one more horrible end for a pet who doesn't deserve to be dumped in the first place. As always, it's the humans who cause the cruel ends for bewildered animals.
Thanks to this site...I got information on how to check up on potential adoptors and my cats will stay safe. Pass the word
