hello everyone- I know its been posted tons the growth/weight chart but i cant find the one ive seen before. I think Louie is smaller for his age and im trying to find out if hes normal weight and growing normally. (kinda worried after he had the horrible fall that he stunted his growth) Does anyone know where i can find this? I know the weight thing is his weight at 12 weeks or is it 14 weeks and x that by 2 and add 1....lol i dont remember.
I was told by the breeder i got Louie from ( well from aunt but had to go threw the breeder to see if i could keep him due to contract) and she told me he would be 6-7 pounds full grown.
Louie is now 16 weeks and weighs 3.6 pounds. Doesnt seem to be gaining weight as fast as Daisy did. But Daisy is also mixed breed (maltese and bichon frise) but my Daisy mae weights close to 15 pounds not if not more. (last time she was in the vets office)
And this weight chart was way off with her, by gosh 8 pounds...lol but she was malnurished and sick for months so ater us getting her well she gained weight and i wonder if shes over weight now and making a vet appt with the vet to see if she is over weight . She is stocky and sturdy..lol The chart did work pretty much for Bentley which is also a mix (toy poodle and bichon frise) he weighs about 8 pounds if not 9 now, he stoped growing and is pretty small but like the vet said he would fill out..
Does the weight chart work better for pure breds since its hard to figure out what really a mix will turn out to be like? Daisy looks like a BIG maltese and everyone thinks shes maltese never question tho her size...lol but i always say shes mixed with bichon frise. Our vet said she looks like a maltese but got the bichon size- and Bentley looks like a poodle doesnt look like a bichon in anyway at least to me.
oh now that im thinking about this and was going to ask this long time ago- how come at the vets office when they list the breed of your dog they dont put mix? Daisys says maltese and Bentley is toy poodle and Louie is maltese of coarse he is pure bred but the others are mixed breed? why dont they put what they are?? They know they are and have told them. I just thought this was werid that they dont put mixed breed dog and only what they look like i guess. why wouldnt they put Daisy as a bichon frise then? or Bentley a bichon frise?? should i ask my vet why their papers say this?
If anyone can direct me or post the link for the growth chart i would so appreciate it. Thanks a ton- Theresa
Hi, I hope someone else who knows replys! I just purchased a new male alaskan malamute puppy... I'm sure he's grown and gained some weight in the past 3 weeks we've owned him... but 3 weeks ago at 4 1/2 months old he weighed in at 62lbs. The vet said he is healthy and proper size for his age etc... I wonder how much he's suppose to weigh when he's finally full grown.. when ever that is..ha ha ha. Let's hope for a good reply to your request.
Well I found a Yorkie growth chart and I would assume a Maltese growth chart would be very similar since they are generally the same size as adults. http://www.yorkiepassion.com/growthchart.htm That puts Louie at around 5.5lbs as an adult. I know what you mean about vets and mixes. I have two Maltese x Yorkies, but because they are from Quebec over there they call a Maltese a Bichon Maltaise so both of them went down in the vets computer as Bichon mixes :) Last time I brought them in the receptionist said "gee..I can't see any Bichon in them at all"
the chart i found i didnt understand how to use it...lol it has the puppies weight in ounces and how do i convert pounds to oz?
Is the weight formula how much they weigh at 12 weeks and double that?
Keesha what formula did you use to come up with the 5.5 pounds ?
Did you use the chart that is in the ounces? I know what standard says my dog should be but of coarse dogs can weigh more or less. Being tho that Louie is pure breed maltese i was hoping i could count on the standard weight more then i could with my mixed breed dogs.
Now thinking about it tho is Louie big for his age? Being 3.6 pounds at 16 weeks? or does that fall in the normal weight for his age? This is what im trying to find some info on what a maltese should weigh at like each month when puppies to know if Louie is going to be akc standard or out of standard. Of coarse it doesnt matter honestly what size my little cujo turns out to be, but hoping for standard size as the breeder said. Both of Louies parents of coase were standard weight and size ,If i remember right the mom was 5 pounds and dad was 7 pounds- so this is why the breeder told me that he would weigh between 5-7 pounds, does Louies weight really depend on what his parents weighed? So lets say his parents were out of akc standard and weighed 10 pounds each then Louie would more likly be 10 pound maltese and not in akc standard>
any one know where i can find a monthly weight chart tho for maltese? im going to go on akc right now and see if they have something like this to see if Louie is the weight he should be for his age.
The weight chart would be the same for Maltese as well as Yorkies. It actually is even the same for Chihuahua's :) Basically it seems to be the same for almost any breed that will end up being under 7 lbs at adult size. So for Louie..he at 16 weeks he weighs 3.6 lbs. To find it in the chart you need to calculate the oz's he weighs. 3.6 lbs = 54 oz's. If you go to the left hand side of the chart and find 16 weeks move across that line and find 54 oz follow that down to the bottom of the page and it says his weight at 18 months will be 5.5 lbs. Now it also tells you basically week by week what he should be weighing up to 25 weeks if you are concerned he's not gaining weight. As for mixed breed dogs..There are no growth charts for them. The triple their weight at 8 weeks and double it at 12 weeks works fairly well IF they are going to end up less than 7 lbs as an adult. So for someone like Louie it would be fairly accurate since he will most likely be in that range as a purebred Maltese. You would think that when you mix dogs you could basically take the top "standard" weight of the largest parents breed and safely assume that the mixed puppy will not be any bigger than that but I know from experience that isn't the case. I have a 20 lb Maltese x Poodle. Ever seen a 20 lb Maltese or 20 lb Toy/Miniature Poodle? :)
Keesha, thanks for exsplaining that , i cant believe i had a brain fart and coudnt remember the 16oz is one pound..lol gosh i know that.
Also how funny i have a maltese and bichon frise mix named Daisy and shes gotta be pushing over 15 pounds now , gotta be close to 18 shes a heavy girl...lol yes none of the charts were correct with her weight, and when i got her at 14 weeks she only weighed 2.3 pounds. so the chart was way off with her... She looks like a maltese tho but is the size of a bichon frise, shes a very pretty dog tho and is full of spunk and personality and smiles all day long, a very happy girl. Our only problem we have with Daisy well theres a few but she is sassy and talks back alot and also she barks at everything...
Just seems Louie is close to 4 pounds already and being 16 weeks old i assumed he was going to double that weight and be a large maltese. which like i mentined before i dont care about size so much but being pure bred i was hoping he would fall under the akc standard size tho. Thanks for your help and now i understand the chart, i just cant believe i didnt think about the 16 oz is 1 pound , how dumb... lol
www.freewebs.com/soniasckcregisteredpuppies/puppyweightchart . Here is a weight chart I found. Maybe it can help. I have a 12 week old maltese and she weighs 2lbs. The pet store told me she may be 9lbs. I doubt it because she is really small.
This is the formula I got off a fellow breeder. Take the 6 week weight double it then double it again. For instance a 1 pound pup at 6 weeks doubled would be 2 doubled again would be 4 pounds at adult ( 1+1=2+2=4)If no one has one or you cant find one on line I will scan my weight chart in and copy and paste it for you tomorrow. None of my pups have followed the guidline on the charts they have all ended up larger than the chart showed they would.
