This is how the grades were determined:

Start with a grade of 100



1) For every listing of "by-product", subtract 10 points

2) For every non-specific animal source ("meat" or poultry", meat, meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points

3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points

4) For every grain "mill run" or non-specific rain source, subtract 5 points

5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five ingredients (i.e. ground brown rice", brewer's rice", "rice flour" are all the same grain), subtract 5 points

6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points

7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points

8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points

9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points

10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 points

11) If lamb is the only animal protein source unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points

12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points

13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points

14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic to beef), subtract 1 point

15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point

Extra Credit:

1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points

2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed goup or nutritionist, add 5 points

3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points

4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points

5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points

6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains) add 3 points

7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free add 2 points

8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points

9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds) add 2 points

10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point

11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point

12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first one; count "chicken" and "chicken meal" as only one protein source, but "chicken" and "" as 2 different sources) add 1 point

13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point

14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are pesticide free, add 1 point

I was just thinking about this list the other day! Do any of you have any experience with California Natural?

When switching food the dogs may get sick if you don't do it slowly.

I will wait until the bag is half gone. I will then start to add the new food. Say 1/4 cup to 1 cup. Daily/weekly I will add a little more. It all depends on what size bag or dog.

You can do it in a week or two would be fine also.

I forget California Natural's score, but it is a good food. It has less ingredients than many others, and is often suggested for dogs that have allergies. I've never actually bought the food, but I've bought bags of the treats already, and my dogs love them.

Thanks. I'll grab the bag a little later. We got some for Pebbles yesterday--her first bag of adult foood :). She hasn't been tested, but we think she has food allergies & wanted to see if this helps. I'm just thankful she isn't a picky eater--she went directly to her bowl and ate without a problem. The pieces are a little larger than wellness, but she's handling it!

Yay!!! Canidae gets an A+... hmm, just curious what is better then Canidae and in around the same price? I pay $40-$50 per i believe 20lb?

Please don't cast me out to the sharks..but..I feed my pups Eukanuba puppy (large breed). I noticed that it only got a -C-. So, where could I find these other foods that made the high grades? I have a Tractor Supply store around me but i don't really have any feed stores so to speak. I also have Wal Mart...wich I will NOT buy ANY puppy food from..and I have a PetSmart wich is where I currently purchase all their food from. Where do you find the better brands? I'm not rollin' in the dough so I can't afford $100 a bag or anything but i'm already paying $50 for the biggest bag (sorry I'm not sure of the lbs) that Eukanuba puupy food comes in. And they can go through that in a month or less. Can anyone give me any suggestions?

Petsmart carries a brand called Avoderm which is pretty good. I forget its rating but I think it was an A or higher.

I found the Royal Canin Maxi Puppy food at PetsMart and i saw on the list that it got a score of 106 A+. Does anyone have any personal experience with this dog food? Is it good bad or inbetween?? I'm buying them a new bag of dog food tonight and was going to slowly introduce them to that (Royal Canin) but I wanted another opinion.

I also found the Royal Canin for Boxers..but it says that it's for boxers 15months and over. Don't suppose they make a food like that for boxer puppies do they?? Because just reading the description it sounded like what they needed!!!

I live in a small town and we don't have any stores to buy good dog food, we only have have wal-mart and food stores. I have to order my dog's food on the internet from pet food direct or petco. I order Eagle pack holistic and get the biggest bag for about $43.00, sometimes its on sale for about $35. I stock up when we go out of town. It works out pretty good that way.

TYPICAL ANALYSIS: Protein 20%, Oil 10%, Fibre 4%, Ash 8.5%.

No, it doesn't sound like a good food. Please look at the scale and see how it rates.
