Hello- first time poster here. A good friend is wanting to purchase an English bulldog puppy. She has owned two English bullies in the past. One she had when living with her parents lived a long healthy life to the age of 12 and the other she purchased on her own died at age 5 of some orthopedic disorder (can't remember what she called it), that she blamed on irresponsible breeding. This time she wants to make a good decision and buy from a responsible breeder. I am a total shelter/rescue type and encouraged the rescue route, but she says bullies can have serious health issues and their lives aren't very long under the best conditions and she really wants a young puppy. SO..... my question is- what does a good English bulldog breeder test sire and dam for--- hips, elbows, eyes? etc.? What do we ask when we go to look at pups? I promised to accompany her and told her I would do some research. Thanks in advance!!
You ask to see the adults first of all. Check references of other people who have bought from this breeder. English Bulldogs are checked for hips and eyes and their are other tests also. English bulldogs have alot of skin allergies too. I have 2 bulldogs right now. The food you feed your puppy will help with allergies.
I would also do alot of online research on pedigrees, breeders etc. I do know that there are quite a few great breeders of bullies in Hungary because of my dealings with Bordeaux breeders also located there.
I prefur to have my Bordeaux with fur instead of a cork and bottle ;)
I've looked a quite a few English bulldog breeder's websites and I have not been impressed so far. None of them mention testing of the breeding stock- even those that compete their dogs, so I'm guessing that they breed w/o testing. If I were getting clearances you can bet I'd be bragging about it on my website!
Does anyone want to recommend a good breeder? I don't know if that's allowed here or not since I am new. Thanks for any more information you can supply!
