Hi All - most of you know the story with Lila and me anxiously awaiting her first heat. (if you don't - just let me know) Now, remember that she's a lab mix, I would say about 55 lbs right now and still no heat. Question, can they go into heat at any time of the year? For whatever reason I thought they went into cycle just in the spring.
I just need to know if I'm waiting for something that's just not going to happen until after the winter.
Forgive my cluelessness - I've never waited for a heat. Thanks
A bitch can go into heat at any time of the year, and she may not go into her first heat for a few months, or she might! Once she does, you can sort of predict the next one, USUALLY. I'm sure you've already read about the 'silent heat' issue, that's always good for a migraine for me, anyway. Don't worry, it'll be coming.
I have had dogs not go into heat until 15 months of age. Just because a doggie can "technically" go into heat at 6 months, most do not. I would venture to say the average is about 9 months to a year... some are even longer such as the one I mentioned with me. No dog is the same, never compare to any other :-)
My dog is 7 months and has not went into heat yet. Im not sure how accurate this is but my vet said that I shouldnt expect her to go into heat until around the time her mom conceived her. Something about heat patterns repeating themselves in the offspring. He likes to wait until puppies are at least 6 months before spaying or neutering them.
She is only 6 1/2 months old I wouldn't worry so much about it. I don't know the story but it shouldn't really be a concern.
I have had females that don't come in until 9-13months, thats about when they normally have their 1st for mine, with a few exceptions. Even others dogs I've know have come in as young as 6-7 months or as old as almost 18 months (if they didn't have a silent heat so who knows). No real rule of thumb.
I had a dog that did'nt go in heat until she was 11mons. old but the female I have now went in heat at 6mons. old. Some dogs are more mature than others just like people. And they go in heat about two times a year.
