okay so my bassset was diagnosed with kennel cough tuesday and now that she's on the medicine I haven't heard her cough once but now as always happens with kids my doxie has it. We gave him the vaccination when I took my basset in but aparently it wasn't enough. Anyway I'm going to pick up his medicine later today but I was wondering if there was anything I could do to help the little guy with his cough...he's 7 weeks old and only 3 pounds and I just feel so helpless...any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.
Kennel Cough is an infection that simply has to take its course. do NOT under any circumstances expose either of the dogs to another dog. It's one of the single most highly contageous diseases in the canine world. If the other pup was exposed before the shot was given, that's why he came down with it. Canines cough more with activity. Limit play, really pups should not do much of anything. This can take up to 3 weeks to go away.
It sounds and appears much more horrible then it is. The only time this is a problem is when owners do nothing about it and it becomes so severe it becomes life threatening. You are not hardly that. We all feel helpless when it happens, I assure you it's happened to me too :-( It's really nasty sounding and the poor things cought and hack. The good news, it will pass. As I said, the one thing you must not do under any circumstances is expose those 2 dogs to another dog for probably a good 4-5 weeks. NEVER, not once. Good luck.
Doxicyline, cough syrup, and time. Make sure they have lots of fresh clean water to drink. There appetite might not be to great until the meds kick in. And just keep them quarinitined away from other pets.
