I just took my 7 week old shih tzu runt to the vets this morning due to obvious pain when you would pick him up. I narrowed it down to the neck/jaw area. The vet took full body xrays and found nothing but said that it could be hard to find any breaks since his bones are still basically cartiledge (sp?) and gave him pain meds and anti inflammitories. She said sometimes they pop out of it in 24 hours but more than likely he wouldn't. This morning, he was still holding his head up, it just hurt him. Since I've picked him up from the vets, he's been very still and sleeping but shivering (I understand this is more than likely from the pain meds) can anybody give me any more information. Could it be a severly pulled muscle?? They said to give it a few days and see how it goes. Is that long enough? I can't put this little guy to sleep if I know there is still a chance of later recovery!......Please help.
PTS is not anything at this point to be thinking about. Do you have access to a specialty vet? I would definitely see if you can get him into a specialist. It may be nothing more then a twist or something but I would perhaps pursue a little further and get him in. Maybe someone else has more experience then I with this thing, sorry I can't help more.
It's hard to say what It could be, so sory. I would keep him quiet, be certain that he gets enough to eat. Probably go to a soft diet so that he does not have to chew and work his jaw so much. I had a aspiration issue with my runt for 3 weeks, the vet thought it was a nasal deformity or possibly a trachea problem. It was suggested to me that I have her PTS as well. Now granted in the majority of "breeder" environments she probably would not have made it, but in a BREEDERS home she had a fighting chance. I had to bottle feed her 4-5 times a day slowly, then use a ball syringe to clear her nasal passage and place antibiotic drops in her nose after every feeding. Thankfully she did not get an infection and did grow out of the problem. To day she is a perfectly healthy and lovingly spunky little girl.
There is hope and I know that you are willing to put in the time it takes to get her through this if she is able to. So don't give up on the little squirt, they repay you 100 fold when they can ;)Maby it is a tooth pain from cutting molars? Wouldn't that be wonderful!
I prefur to have my Bordeaux with fur instead of a cork and bottle ;)
I just wanted to thank everyone for their help. Marley passed away at about 5:15 this evening. I'm afraid it was something much more than neck injury. It's a difficult time for my husband and I....as short of a time that he was here...he stole our hearts and ran with them. My friends little pom died exactly one month ago today and we're hoping that they're together playing in the great puppy heaven above. He's out of pain now and where he belongs. Thank you again for everyone's help. You've been great.
Thank you everybody. It's been hard...it seems like I miss him more everyday!! We've decided to keep his brother(Jackson...Jax for short)and he's really helped us through it!! He's such a happy little boy!! Thank you again everybody for the support! You've all been so awesome!!!
I never got a dx. The vet assumed it was a neck injury as well, because he was having such a hard time holding his head and the pain seemed to be in that general area. She told me to give it a few days....but he passed that evening so I never got a chance to find out, which bothers me. I'm hoping it's not a genetic thing. But all the other puppies checked out fine. I just wish I knew. He was such a sweet boy. He was also diagnosed as blind the week before. He was just a troubled baby from the start. But I never gave up on him. I tried terrificpets.com hoping someone else could help me with it. What bothered me more was I called the vet I used to use (stopped using them because of differences) and the vet told me not to worry about it that it would pass...didn't even say I should bring him in for a second opinion (now I remember why I stopped using them!). The only other thing I worry about, is that it WAS a neck injury and that the pain meds or the wormer had something to do with it. I just feel like something went wrong after we left the vets office.
