I would love to take Charlie to a puppy trainer but according to the Yellow pages, the closest is Petsmart which is an hour away.
Charlie is a smart dog but VERY STUBBORN!!! We can be outside for 10 to 15 mins or longer, and yet he still comes in to poop!! We started the crate training again but only during the day. He still wakes us up every 2 hours to go potty (well it is more of a drip of pee then off for some running) at night so back to the crate he goes, even though he barks/whines for at least 30 mins or more! We will move the crate to the farthest room and put in our ear plugs. I know he can hold it for longer than 2 hours because he does during the day! He will sit, after about 5 "SITs". He still does not like the leash and try to wiggle out of it if I won't let him go to a certain spot, aka the road. He has stopped chewing on the furniture but he is now trying to chew the new kitten, along with hubby shoes.
Is there a site I can search for trainers in my area?
Mommy to Thelma and Louise (dogs), Larry, Sam, Rescue (cats), Logan (RIP) (hamster) and Charlie (dog).
If you cant find anything closer and end up going to PetSmart, I will tell you that we have had a great experience with them. We havent been going that long and I have already learned things I didnt learn from training books. Im really impressed with our trainer. Just thought Id share that. :-)
You can search for trainers in your area on the Animal Behavior College website, that way you can find a certified trainer. A lot of people claim to be trainers who are not certified. Also check to see if they are a member of the National Association of Pet Dog Trainers. The website is animalbehaviorcollege.com. Also just a tip, when you said your dog only sits after about five sits, you should only tell the dog to do the command one time and then use a food lure to help the dog into position. Repeating the command only teaches the dog they do not have to listen until you repeat yourself multiple times and get frustrated with him. Hope this helps.
