First things first, we ARE getting her spayed ASAP, we just have to make an appointment with the local spay/neuter clinic.
Anyway, I'm kind of paranoid about my puppy getting pregnant. There's been a little beagle dog -belongs to the neighbors- hanging around our house when Missy's outside, and until now we haven't had a problem with him (I don't think he's neutured). He's only came down here twice, but every time he's been here I've kept a close eye on him to make sure that he didn't try anything. Well today, he tried to get on her (if you know what i mean) but I got her away before he could. Unless he did it earlier today when i wasn't looking, which I don't think so.The vets office told us that a female puppy could go into heat anywhere from 6-12 months. And she hasn't shown any signs of being in heat either... so is it possible for her to get pregnant now? We're getting her fixed in the next week hopefully, and until then I'm keeping her on a leash when outside, and if the little beagle dog comes back I'll chase him off to prevent him humping her.
I don't think it's worth the risk. Can you take her out on a leash til you get her spayed? I know it might be a pain but it's better than the alternative.
Also I would think there are laws against dogs running loose especially if intact. You might want to mention to your neighbor that the beagle is hanging around and you don't think that it's a good idea.
Both my girls were spayed at 6 months. Neither had gone into heat but I still made sure I took precautions til their spay.
That is what they told me also, wait until a year. I had a contract with the shelter that she had to be done at 6 months. Other wise I would have had to wait for her or loose her to someone else, she was only 8 weeks old. I would have had to wait a few more weeks.
I wanted to get her out asap and bring her home to start training.
I took her in at 5 months and the vet said her uterus was dropping so I nailed it just in time. She would have gone into heat in the next month or so.
You should be outside with your dog at all times and never leave your dog unsupervised. Anything can happen when your not out there with your female dog. If you cant be out with your dog every time she goes out you need to put her in a kennel or something that she will be safe and kept away from male dogs that will try to mate with her.
My female is spayed and i have 3 dogs and still go out with them every time they go out side,. They never go out with out me and they have my full attention when i am out with them-
you cant have your dog spayed when she is in heat you have to wait till after the heat cycle this is what my vet told me. and each heat she has her chances of getting cancer are greater. again this is what my vet told me-
Just like in humans, once a female starts cycling they can conceive. But unlike humans, dogs can have a silent heat, which is not abnormal for a young female's first cycle. The only way to prevent it is abstanance or spaying. Spaying is the safest way to go.
